Why is it that Alltel (and Verizon) don't offer Nokia phones, at least
according to Phonescoop?  Are the Kyoceras that much better?

To my knowledge, Alltel did offer Nokia, as I used a Nokia 5185i with all
for about a year. Also, if memory serves correct, while the 5185i isn't no
longer being made, they do offer Nokia phones with certain plans here in
NC....

Baylor,
Nokia has not had much luck with CDMA phones.  They admitted failure with
the 6185 ( see: http://www.mountainwireless.com/nokianews.htm ) and they
tried to make amends with the much 'improved' 5185i.  Unfortunately, the
5100 series was tired and not flashy, so it sold well only because Nokia
gave CDMA carriers a good price.

Nokia tried to liven up the market with the 3285 CDMA phone, but people just
saw more of the same, nothing cool like the 3260 for TDMA and 3290 for GSM.
Nokia said, the CDMA market sucks, we'll dump it.

This decision is based on the fact that Nokia refused to pay Qualcomm the
rights to CDMA chips, and designed their own, and failed.  I think they were
trying to save $20 per phone, and lost the multi-million dollar market.
Kyoceras are ex-Qualcomm phones, so they got the best technology, free.

ALLTEL offers two Nokia brand phones at the moment, the 5185i is
available only on prepaid service (it was available on postpaid up until
about a month ago) and the 3585i is now available on postpay in most
markets as far as i know.
