I'm not George, but I have Alltel in Upstate SC. I'm satisfied with
the service. I'm in Charlotte often, and it works well there, too.
VERY! They, in the Carolinas, have excellent coverage. I've been in
very few places without, and several of those are "real local" where
they have holes ... 221 between Spartanburg and NC is one. Verizon
uses them in most of eastern NC/SC. They have lower rates than
Verizon, it seems. I'll be glad to discuss more details if you wish

Hi, Tri-Mode:
For over ten years, I have had phones on each carrier, continuously. I am
very pleased with Alltel. I get a strong signal almost everywhere I go, from
the Coast to the Mountains.
I just drove from Raleigh to Kannapolis to meet an old friend for some BBQ.
Sitting in the restaurant (Porky's in China Grove), VZW flickered between
one and no bars, and I actually missed an incoming call. The T720 on Alltel
had several bars. This is typical of what I find outside the "major" metro
areas.
As mentioned before in this NG, Alltel in the Carolinas currently has a plan
for $39.95 which gives 1,000 ANYTIME minutes, plus Free Long Distance from
NC/SC to anywhere in the country. And, for $10/month, you can add another
100 minutes of Total Freedom. Use it anywhere in the USA. If you didn't
travel that month, you have an extra 100 minutes to use in the home area.
You have to ask for this feature. They don't advertise it (and I suspect it
will be phased out in the future unless you are "grandfathered".) Ditto
for the 1,000 minutes. The norm at this price is 800 minutes. It's probably
a holiday promotion.
I like Verizon, also. Good phones, and great service. I feel that my VZW
phone tries to hold on to an in-system tower too long, instead of switching
to the other carrier. However, VZW is my primary business phone and it does
well. I use a lot of digital features in an arc between Raleigh and
Charlotte, and getting E-Mail on I-85 at 70 MPH is a thrill. (grin)
Summary: If you're locked into a contract with VZW, it's not the end of the
world. If you simply MUST have solid communications (like me), have a
phone on each carrier. (Around town, the K-6035 from VZW is on my belt and
the Alltel phone sits in the car.) Or, if your VZW phone has a connector
port, investigate the external antennas and adaptors available on the web.
The most painless method for comparing Alltel with your other carrier is to
activate an old phone, rather than getting a phone "free" and being stuck in
a contract. True, you'll pay an activation fee. But you can get out anytime
you wish. Or, if you find you like the service, you can agree to a contract
and get a new phone.

By the way, Alltel will activate an analog-only
phone on the $39.95 plan (but you can't get the
optional Total Freedom minutes). So, drag
that clunker out of the closet and give it a try.

Can you take a Vx4400 and activate it on Alltel?
Where I have my problem with a signal with Verizon in NC and SC is the rural
areas. Sounds like Alltel may be better. I have the NC/SC plan for 900
minutes for $49.95 (I think). Sounds like the 1,000 in NC and SC with
Alltel is a better deal. Plus it has unlimited mobile to mobile and mobile
to home.

They had a better one July/Aug/Sept, 100 total freedom +1000 NC/SC for
$39.95. My son signed up then. Now, the 100 total freedom add $10.

Darn! I must be slipping!!! I check the ads and web site constantly and I
didn't see that free Total Freedom enhancement. The first time I saw it
(which was late September), it was a ten-dollar add-on. Your son got an
excellent deal. Tell him to smile all the way to the bank--talking on his
cell phone as he goes. (grin)

Thought I was the only one who noticed that. I have phones from both VZW
and SPCS. They are at two extremes... VZW won't roam even when it needs
to, and SPCS starts roaming and won't stop, even right under an SPCS
tower.

Yes, it is. :)

Hence the two phones I have. There are actually very rural areas around
here (Hanover County, VA) where Sprint PCS has far better coverage than
VZW, mostly in the areas that coincide with Sprint/Centel landline service
territory. In fact, there are very few areas in Virginia where my Sprint
PCS handset won't work in native Sprint PCS network. I'm on an agent plan
without the "Free & Clear America" add-on, and I really don't need it. My
VZW line does work pretty much "anywhere" except a few pockets in the
western part of Hanover County (obvious on the Local DigitalChoice map...
www.verizonwireless.com, ZIP code 23005, just northwest of Richmond).

Really? Alltel will do that? I know Alltel will activate just about any
unlocked CDMA handset, but I didn't know they'd do it without a contract.
It's been a long time since I was an Alltel customer... not since back in
around 2000. I went to upgrade my
handset back in around 1998 or 1999, just a few weeks after the 360
Communications buyout. Alltel threw the switch on a very limited digital
network in Richmond and I rushed out to get my nice new Qualcomm QCP-820.
:) I remember asking out of curiosity if you have to sign a contract if
you're a new customer and you bring a phone with you. Their policy at the
time was "yes, you do" and AFAIK they still require this here in RIchmond.
Is this a VZW-style market variance? :)

They have been doing it for me. The contract assures them they will be paid
for the phone, but since you are bringing your own, that is not necessary.
The activation fee covers their cost for bringing a new account on line, so
paying that should be all that is needed.
If all else fails, activate an old phone on PREPAID service. I keep several
of these accounts so I can have a spare phone in the trunk of each vehicle.
As long as I make an outgoing call (of any length) on each phone once a
month, the minutes never expire.

P.S. Sorry for the delayed response. I have been in Houston, where my T720
on Alltel worked great! Ditto for the Pittsburgh airport. I used 95 of my
100 minutes of Total Freedom. Best $10 I have spent, lately! :)
