VZW LG VX4400...on Alltel?

I've detailed my father's experience with the LG 5450 on Alltel. Well,
we've found out that there's no way to change the key light settings
on the 5450 at ALL (confirmed by LG customer service), and this issue
is really bothering him. He also doesn't like the fact that the 5450's
keys are basically flush with the body of the phone, and prefers the
slightly raised keys on the 4400. And he doesn't need a camera phone,
and only bought the 5450 because it was an LG phone and he liked mine,
and the 5450 is the only LG phone Alltel sells.

He wants to know if there's any way a VZW LG 4400 could be activated
on Alltel, even if he bought it unactivated from VZW at full retail. I
told him there may be a decent shot of it, since Alltel may have the
LG software now that it sells the 5450 (and that software may include
4400 software in it), and due to the fact that Alltel and VZW pretty
much use the same technology and many of the same phones.

So...can it be done? Can it be done easily? He's ready to return or
sell the 5450.

(Note: This is a repeat of a message I posted on another forum, but
I'm trying to get the widest and quickest response...thanks!)

It's worth a try. It's the right technology.

Oh, I figured that much...but I'm curious to know if anyone's actually
done it.  "Worth a try" is one thing, but if he's spending money to
buy a phone, I'd like to know in advance...

It could be possible. But there is one catcher. Why not just go with VZW,
there are many other phones that he may find suitable that don't have the
picture phone features which he does not want. I suggest he goes into the
store and just look around at the equipment and see what he likes. There may
be something he likes similar to what you have but not a picture phone. That
is what the retail store is for, and tell him if they ask if they can help
him say no. To allow him time to look alone with out someone bothering him
or even trying to pressure him into purchasing something he does not even
want. Good luck.

Changing carriers isn't an option.  He has a $69 unlimited plan with
Alltel that VZW wouldn't be able to match, and he's not willing to
give it up.  He's on the cell phone a LOT.

I've done it with other phones, mainly Sprint phones on Verizon, but
there's no reason there should be a problem.  Just have Altell change
the ESN to the new phone, dial whatever number you have to dial with
Altell to get their PRL (you may have to program the MSN and other
data first, or they may have a means of programming it over the air),
and the phone should work.

I'd talk to Altell Tech Support, making sure I got someone
knowledgeable, to make sure there are no problems I haven't thought of
(like the PRL being tailored to the phone model), and to make sure
that Altell will accept a phone they don't sell (they used to).

This is the kinda stuff I'm wondering about.  I haven't been all that
impressed with my experiences with Alltel tech support, though.

Just tonight, we were trying to figure out why dialing into his phone
number from his cell phone stopped kicking directly into the menu, but
instead, dumped him into the "leave a message" part.  They said they'd
had some calls about it, and said to fix it, they'd need to reset his
voice mailbox (and wipe out three saved messages he had been keeping).

It turns out that didn't do the trick, but using *9 (the equivalent of
VZW's *86) did.  I'm still trying to figure out how to program the
pauses, automatic password, etc., into the voice mail retrieval
position...it doesn't work like it does on the 4400.

Thank you for the advice!  I'd still love to hear from anyone who
actually HAS moved the 4400, specifically, onto Alltel.

Read the manual.  There should be something in there about pauses.
Put the password in after a manual pause.

That's the problem.  The 5450 has a dedicated voice mail retrieval on
number 1...and the place where you enter the number for VM retrieval,
unlike the 4400, doesn't let you put in the pauses.  It just puts in
the number.  The right soft key doesn't have the option to put in a
pause.

I could take over one of his other speed dial numbers for VM, but if I
can get it with pauses/password automatic on #1, I'd like it.

Put some other number in #1 and use #2 for VM.  (I had my wife's cell
# in #1 before I had voice dialing.)

I actually called Alltel about using my 4400 several weeks ago and they said
as long as it was unlocked I could do it.
