I am in a bad area for cell reception. I've got alltel and it is just
marginal but it does work. I tried 2 others before Alltel and they just
wouldn't work. I just noticed a new tower about 2 miles from me. My
signal isn't any stronger. How can I find out who's tower it is? I would
like to get with a service that uses it.

I went there and it said it was updated to 3/11/04. However I know where
several towers that have been in place up to 3 years that is not there.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

heres a sugestion for you, around here, you will often find that the
companys place thier name on the electric meter box, so if you can see
the meter boxes for that tower you are interested in, you might see
the name.

try it,

Jack,
I just went out there and the electric meter panel has places for 6
meters and only one there. It's Verison. I wonder if Alltel shares with
them? Probably not, at least not yet, because my signal isn't any stronger.

Note that it is possible that the tower is not active yet.  I know Alltel
and Verizon do use each others networks as part of Extended Network
agreements so it would be worth researching if the Verizon towers in your
area are considered Extended Network in the Alltel PRL's.

If you are able to get a weak Alltel signal at home and a strong Verizon one
from that new tower your phone will prefer the Alltel one.  If Verizon is
included as Extended Network then it might be worth your while to figure out
how to force your phone to lock on to that Verizon tower (there are ways to
do this, see my other posts or email me for details).

Yes I would appreciate to know how to do that.

You said "If you are able to get a weak Alltel signal at home and a
strong Verizon one from that new tower your phone will prefer the Alltel
one". I don't get any strong signal and I assume the signal I get is
Alltel. How can I tell what signal I am getting? My phone is Nokia
5185i. I have contacted both Alltel and Verizon about that tower and
their possible use of it. They claim they don't know anything about it
and the bad part of it is they aren't interested in finding out.

Where are you located?  This will help us determine what options you have
available.  We need to figure out if Verizon is 800mhz in your area or
1900mhz and what their SID is in the area (system ID)

I have never had a Nokia CDMA phone, but from my understanding *3001#12345#
will get you into a service menu.

On my LG VX 4400 I can go into programming, change my home SID to whatever
the SID is of the system I want to use and then go into another menu and
force it to "home only".

Now another option is that if Verizon uses 1900mhz in your area and Alltel
uses 800mhz, you could just force your phone into PCS (aka 1900mhz mode) and
hopefully it would pick up that Verizon tower (or who knows, it could pick
up Sprint instead...)

The new tower is located about 1 mile north of Mart, Tx.

It looks like Verizon in your area is using 1900mhz.  The 800mhz spectrum in
Texas is such a cluster (pardon my language).  The areas are all sliced up
into tiny pieces and they are all owned by random different providers.

http://people.ku.edu/~cinema/wireless/southwest.html

I can't quite tell where on this map Mart TX falls, however, it appears that
Verizon has no 800mhz licenses in your area.  They do however have 1900mhz
licenses

http://people.ku.edu/~cinema/wireless/vzw_pcs.html

Alltel on the other hand, actually has 800mhz spectrum in your area (if I am
looking at the map correctly)!

I am not sure if Alltel provides free roaming over on to Verizon as Verizon
does with Alltel, however, it would be worth giving it a shot!  If you can
force your phone to 1900mhz mode it may pick up that new tower.

I looked at the 1st. link and on the A side I would be located in the
blue labeled AT&T.   On the B side I would be in the bright yellow
labeled Alltel. On the second link I can't tell exactly where I am. On
my plan I have free roaming anywhere. Ever once in a while my phone goes
on roaming here at home.

How would I force my phone to 1900mhz? Can I mess up anything doing it?

Now you understand I don't know anything about this. I don't know the
1900, 800, CDMA etc. If you tell me how keep in mind I will need very
basic step by step instructions.

Forcing your phone to 1900mhz will not mess anything up as long as you set
it back to "auto select" when you are done.  Changing your home SID is a bit
more adventurous, but could always be fixed by having your phone do and
over-the-air activation again.

Does *3001#12345# give you any kind of menu on your phone?  I have never
used a 5185i so I do not know what the menu structure looks like.

Worst case, if you can't hit that Verizon tower for whatever reason you
could force your phone over on to ATT's analog gear and give that a shot.

Other options for you include getting an external antenna for your house or
some kind of booster system.

I punched in the *3001#12345# and got the following menue.
NAM 1
NAM 2
Change SPC
Security
Emergency  Number
Service Number
Serial Number
Programed
Feild Test
Is this what I want?

Contact the local carriers and ask them whether they have expanded
service in your area.  If you don't get an answer borrow a phone for
each carrier from friends or family and try it out yourself.

Thanks you all. I have already contacted local carriers and I should
have ask my dog. At least she would have cocked her head to the side and
looked cute. I have used one persons phone from another carrier, that
service is poor also. I will find more. I have not looked closely
around it for clues, I will.
Thanks
