John -- are you sure you're using the 555 with a GSM carrier?

Sierra Wireless AirCard 555

Connect the AirCard 555 with your notebook computer, handheld device or
PDA, and you have fast, reliable access to E-mail, the Internet and
corporate information on high-speed CDMA2000 1X networks. AirCard
Manager is now available.

But then again, I suppose Alltel is now technically a GSM carrier - with
the AT&T Wireless markets it purchased from Cingular, and with the GSM
network it will be aquiring with Western Wireless.  I'm curious to see
how it's going to handle the AT&T Wireless markets.

Sierra makes card for CDMA and GSM, but the wisest course at this point
for data is the Verizon PC 5220 card that does CDMA EV-DO which is much
faster than 1xRTT on the Sierra 555. It will default to 1xRTT when EV-DO is
not available. The Verizon network is far larger than Alltel's and at this
time, there are no roaming agreements for data, so the larger network is a
major advantage.

Probably not. I haven't looked at it in awhile, been using a Merlin card
recently on T-Mobile.
