I have a Nokia 5185i on Alltel in Canton, OH. At my house, I get a
poor signal on the home network. However, when it goes to roaming, I
get a great signal. I have no roaming charges ever, so I want to
know if I can hack this phone so it will always go on roaming.

I have one idea, that may or may not work for you...but it works for me.
At my house, I get a poor Digital signal from Alltel. If I roam while at
home, I get a very strong Analog signal from some other company. But I
am never charged for roaming. So here is what I do on my 5185i:
Menu--System Select--Analog
This causes the phone to drop the poor Alltel Digital signal and go to
the roaming Analog signal.
If the signal you are hoping for force your phone to roam to is Digital,
this is not going to work for you. Plus, you have to remember to put it
back to "Automatic" when you leave home so that you will pick up the
best possible signals as you travel.
Good luck...

Signal strength aside, if you are roaming , isn't it true that you will not
receive voicemail notifications and emails sent to your phone?
Also, if you are on an Alltel National plan would there be a difference
between good roaming (flashing roam indicator) or bad roaming (solid roam
indicator)?

When I roam to Digital systems, I still receive voice mail notification and
emails. You, of course, do not when on an Analog system.

I'm not on a nationa plan...just an Alabama/Florida/Miss. plan. Flashing or
solid roam is suppose to be OK and never gets billed extra.

I think it depends on the plan you are on. For example in the Alltel
National plan, you can roam on other digital networks like Verizon for
example and if it's flashing you are not charged. However, I was warned
that if I see the a solid roam indicator then that is bad roaming and I will
be charged.
You probably can roam anyway you want as long as you are in
Alabama/Florida/Miss. However, if you travel to Colorado you will pay.
At least that is my understanding.

I believe you are correct, at least in my plan's case. It's "all you can eat"
roaming the AL/FL/MS. Outside of those areas, it is all roaming.

Hmm...I get Voice Mail notification on my Motorola Analog Car phone (4500)
with Alltel.

Steve,
I have a 5185I as well, I think that Alltel is B on the System menu
(menu 5 for system) and just keep it on channel A where it should roam all
the time.

I don't have an A or B setting on my 5185i on the system menu. The only
choices are Automatic, Home and Analog?

Steve,
If you are in Canton, you should be roaming on Verizon. The answer is
to do the opposite of what you'd want to do to maximize your signal:
-Leave the phone in a poor-signal spot in the house: Kitchen, basement,
in a metal box, lower floors.
-Always keep the antenna down.
-Put the phone in your pocket. Body proximity reduces signal
significantly.
