Earlier this year reports claimed that Alltel would be releasing several new
phones in early summer as it expanded its EVDO coverage. Any news on what
might be coming and when? The Alltel selection is pretty stale.

I was sorta hoping they'd give up and put my 99c Alltel/Motorola bagphone
back on AMPS, myself....(c;

Works great, looks brand new!

Emergency 911 phone in the car.....

Larry,

Can you get an OEM rolling backpack for that thing to use it as a portable
or totable? How does that work through airport security? ;-)

Seriously, I know the old bag phones have a place. Got some great service
out of the old analog system. am disappointed (like in the E815 compared to
the V710) to see analog being dropped from many newer phones. It isn't dead
yet.

Cheers.

It is a totable, in a plastic bag with nice cover.  The 2.2AH gelcell is
in the side pocket that zips.  It also has the cig lighter plug for the
car.  Plugging that in charges the battery or runs the phone or both.  I
don't keep the battery with it.  A dead car battery will run a bagphone
for days after you take the other loads off it, unless the battery
exploded.

Analog has NOT been dropped by ANY licensee who wishes to keep his
license.  FCC has MANDATED continued AMPS service to 2008 (and probably
beyond as they've already extended the deadline a few times).  800
systems are still REQUIRED to provide AMPS service to existing users.
They simply refuse to sell AMPS phones to new customers who want more
range.

By the way, if you WERE an AMPS customer of X system, you may STILL get
AMPS service, once again, if you so desire it.  Until I caught my
business competitor monitoring my AMPS calls on Verizon to the detriment
of my business, I had forced Verizon to reinstate my AMPS service on 800-
A, here.  But, I had to go to digital to prevent monitoring my business
calls, so moved to Alltel on digital.

Analog has been dropped by all new phones because the FCC also mandated
they must provide AMPS service as long as people were USING AMPS service.
If they don't get people off AMPS, FCC will extend the deadline, again.
Lots of systems out away from the population areas are still AMPS only!

I used to be an IMTS "Carphone" customer on 152 Mhz.  Those beasts drew
so much off the car battery you didn't talk on them without the engine
running...(c;

Alltel still works fine on AMPS on my old Verizon V60i across South
Carolina, when necessary.

Larry, Larry, Larry.
You keep going on about AMPS.  You have read the posts in
alt.cellular. alltel and alt cellular.verizon about it.  You do know
that AMPS goes "bye-bye" Feb 2008.  Period.  NO MORE extensions.

There are STILL phones that have AMPS.  CURRENT phones at that.
Not many.  But they are out there
