Come on, guys and gals!  There hasn't been anyone making noises about
Alltel in so long my client was going to unsubscribe a dead newsgroup, this
one!

Think hard.  There's just gotta be SOMETHING we can start a big flamewar
about Alltel over!

Even if we have to STAGE a fake flamewar, that's better'n nuthin'!  The
Usenet Gods may dump the group if we don't find something to bitch
about...real soon!  (c;

Have a little fun in the checkout line....
Ask the nearest American, "Did you see the ICE
agents chasing those Mexicans out the back door?"
...Shortens that checkout line right up...(c;

Alltel's TV ads are pretty funny (why they run in Cali, I don't know),
but the Alltel rep in those ads looks like a total dork.

Does he wear a jacket in the middle of the summer when everyone else in
the spam is in shorts and a halter top?

I'm still convinced the VZW "Can you hear me now?" guy is a drug addict
covering the tracks with the coat...(c;

I stopped by Alltel's office and looked at the phones, today.  They've
dropped all the PDAs except the Blackberry and Treos to get rid of the
broadband-enabled PDAs, it seems.  Those are gone.  She said they'd come
out with more phones, soon.  Alltel is on 800 Mhz....800 Mhz cellphones
need PULL UP ANTENNAS.  Only the E815 Moto had a pull-up, 1/4 wave 800
Mhz antenna.  How awful.

Wrong.

There is an Audiovox smartphone currently available as well.  It runs
a version of Windows.

Hmm....not demo'd at the Charleston Alltel main store.

Thanks.

I bought a Dell X51v PDA with Win Mobile 5 on it.  It was just awful.  It
crashed 8 times a day...even just sitting there doing nothing!  After
putting up with that for 10 days, I returned it for refund before my 15
day limit ran out.  I bought it for running "Skype for Mobile" because it
would logon at commercial hotspots that require webpage logon.  That
seemed to work...when the operating system did.  Now we have Sony Mylo
with Skype and browser in it but the Skype on the Mylo is just awful.
Mylo has a speaker, but NO SPEAKERPHONE on Skype.  Someone screwed up.
For $350 you get speakerphone, camera and all the Skype toys.  Maybe next
try they'll get it right.

Does Win Mobile 5 crash in the PDA phones?  Does it eat the battery in
hours?  X51v would run just over 2 hours on a big Li-Ion
pack....unacceptable in a PDA.

I have VERY little faith in battery estimates.  My wife has a new
Motorola W315 ... uses it about 5 minutes a day ... and in strong
areas, where my 6 year old StarTac gets 2 days with light use, her
W315 dies in less than 48 hours.

SUPPOSEDLY Talk: 3.05 hours, Standby: 217 hours per PhoneScoop.

Bad battery?  Maybe.  She went back to Alltel and was told that 2 days
is good.

But hey, Larry wants flames ... when ATT buys Alltel, do we have to
all get GSM phones?

I had played with the Starcom at Alltel, before.  Alltel has no broadband
in Charleston, yet, so I redirected its wifi to the free internet service
at Quiznos' deli shop right next door to the office.  Then, I asked the
sales girl why she told me hers was slow on 1X Alltel.  "Look here.  It
works great!" and I showed her on the demo they had on the floor.

The look on her face? - PRICELESS....
I showed her how to do it and made her swear on her virginity she
wouldn't lie and show the customers how fast it was, using Quiznos' wifi
to get real speed..(c;

All these units are now GONE from the main store.  Only the phone-only
Blackberries and Moto PDAs remain.  A salesman told me they were
"discontinued", so I guess his was a lie or ignorance as I see they still
have them, unhobbled.

Of the units I've seen, I do like this one best.  $619.99 retail?
Hmm...Where do they get these prices, Mars?

Uh, actually the e815 is one of the few phones, in the Alltel stable
anyway, that is all digital. It has no analog component like the v710
it replaced. Alltel does still support the 800 mhz amps band. Around
here though, you get full evdo.....

Here, by the way is northern Louisiana.

Funny you should mention AMPS.  Alltel has a NEW AMPS-capable, high-
powered phone that plugs into the car, when you need the mobile power of
AMPS in the country, then unplugs and goes in your pocket when you get
away from the car:

The phone is from Motorola, but I cannot located it like the girl in the
Alltel RESELLER store did a couple of days ago.  There is a car kit that
installs for it that may have a 3W amp or not, but she told me it would
work on the AMPS system and Alltel wouldn't be dumping AMPS in Feb08 like
I hear about VZW.  Sorry I couldn't find a URL on Alltel or Moto website.
They probably keep it hidden from the public.

When you think about it, it makes sense that Alltel is keeping AMPS
and even offering such a phone as you describe.

Alltel is primarily a rural-and-smaller-metro-area provider, just like
they were with landlines before they spun off their landline business.

My hometown (Cleveland, OH, 25th biggest city in the US), and probably
Charlotte, NC, are the biggest markets they serve...

MOTO has a new AMPS phone!

Verizon customers - EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT!

You sit at the bar, plop down your MANLY M800 bag next to your MANLY
beer....Toyphone wimps flee in terror it may transmit and burn the fuzz
off their........er, ah.....arms.  Girls flock to the guy with the MANLY
phone to run their hands over its leather case and feel the heat from its
MANLY transmitter....AR AR!

With emergency services, governments, oil companies and industry buying
this....I think AMPS will be on-the-air for many years to come.  It just
WORKS out where the MEN are working!
