Maybe I am behind the times; however, does anyone know of software that will
permit a wireless-networked PC to dial out on an AllTel cell phone, i.e.
execute the dialing function only?

Download Skype free and install.  Open a free Skype account.
Sign up for Skype Out Unlimited for $30/YEAR, not month.
Skype doesn't care where you get broadband from and you can run 9
simultaneous Skypes on your account from anywhere on the planet.

Skype Out Unlimited will call ANY phone in the US and Canada FROM any
broadband INSIDE the US and Canada, 24/7/365 with NO MINUTE CHARGES.
Calling Skype Out to most civilized other places is only 2.1USc/min
charged against your precharged account ($10 for 7 hours).  Something new
is each call not on the unlimited plan is also billed 3.9USc initial fee
per call.  The Skype interface tells you how much money is charged up
into your account.  If you don't call out of the country much, you'll
find Skype gives you so many freebie phone minutes by simply filling out
a webpage form that you actually ADD more money than you use.  I put $10
in my account a couple of years ago, called some odd places, and my
account says I have $12.14 on the interface as I'm typing this...(c;

Of course, if both caller and callee use Skype, not phones, all calls are
free from anyplace on the planet, to anyplace on the planet....full
duplex, up to 30 frames/second digital video from your cams, with full-
featured texting, including any file transfers....all free...no time
limit.  You can stay connected to your buddy in Tokyo on video,
permanently!

Using any VoIP on Alltel is forbidden by the data AUP, which, like
Verizon, forbids anything except spam-soaked webpage browsing, email and
access to your company's intranet if it has one.  All other internet
traffic...streaming, VoIP, FTP, etc., is forbidden.  However, unlike
Verizon Wireless, Alltel doesn't enforce this policy and I know of noone
who has been cut off for using too much data.  They don't seem to care,
but reserve the right to care if someone raises hell, it seems.....???

Being free, you can have as many Skype accounts as you like.  I also have
Skype In, which gives me up to 9 separate phone numbers in many countries
across the planet so POTS and cellular callers can call into my Netgear
SPH101 Skype Phone on wifi or one of the computers running the Skype
client.  Those are $38/YEAR/Number, last time I paid.  I have two, at the
moment, one in Charleston, SC and another in London, UK, just for the
hell of it....(c;  I get interesting wrong numbers on the London
number....(c;  I've resisted getting a local number in Latvia, so far.
The Charleston Skype In number is in a block of numbers AOL uses for
dialup modem access.  This means this block is NEVER called by
telemarketing shysters, leaving your Skype In phone quiet during
dinner...a fantastic feature well worth the price.  The Skype phone is my
home phone.  I haven't paid Bell$outh in years....

Are you sure he wasn't just talking about using a PC to dial the cell
phone and make a call on Alltel's network? I am not sure, but I think
that might have been what he's referring to.

TO Steven:

Yes!    You have it right.

I use my cell for almost everything short of 800 calls.  When in the office,
phone numbers are easier to access than finger-fumbling a list on the cell
phone.  The current PC dialer does the simple: dials on a land-line.  Now
would like to dial the cell phone.    Is there anything available??

If he's got an aircard on Alltel with unlimited data service, wouldn't it
be better if he could make unlimited phone calls, with no airtime charges,
from any system he can connect to on the aircard....instead of having the
aircard eating up cellphone minutes, unnecessarily?  He'd CERTAINLY be
enjoying Skype better if he were calling overseas from it...2.1c/min to
Europe/Asia instead of the $1.50-$3/min cellular phone ripoff carriers
want.

If he's taken the trouble to stop, get out the laptop, boot it up, insert
the aircard and connect to data, using Skype would simply be part of the
computer bootup and no more trouble at all.  He's going to have to have a
mic and speakers for anything.  I'm just bypassing the airtime ripoff.

But he said that what I suggested was what he actually wants to do. He
said "phone," not "data device...."

Well, do you know if he can do what he's asking? It used to be that
you could send AT commands to cell phones, but I think that
functionality went away long ago.

On the other hand, I can certainly dial my Motorola phone from my
computer using Motorola Phone Tools. DataPilot or a similar program
may work if he doesn't have a Motorola phone. Don't know why I didn't
think of that earlier. :)

I don't think so because the aircard has no audio-to-digital interface.
