Anyone using EDGE in the Tampa Bay area? Would appreciate comments on
coverage. Thanks in advance!

Same as GSM?!

EDGE is a "dataservice/coding scheme" ontop of GSM network so the coverage
is the same.

Thanks, but does it work well in Tampa? I am not inclined to trust the
CSR's or the pretty maps in the store. I am trying to help a client take his
realty service mobile. He already has AT&T voice, but it is TDMA. I am
inclined to tell him to get VZW, but he would appreciate having only one
bill and is happy with the AT&T voice. This would be used with a PC Card in
a laptop, not as a tethered phone.

should be good for comic relief.

I have the Sony Ericsson card (got it when it first came out) and have
tested the service quite a bit even while riding in a car in motion.
I live in Pinellas across the bay.  The service is quite impressive.
Under good signal conditions, I can run the download speed test at
dslreports.com and get about 130kbps down and 40kbps up.  I would say
the average is about 100 down / 20 up.  The service of course will
vary once more users get on the system from what I read on the
technology.   Of course your RF signal will also have a significant
effect as well I am sure.  In this regard, I am fine since I usually
find a decent signal on GSM/1900.  One thing to note is that the card
works on both 800 and 1900 Mhz and currently ATTWS is 1900 on
GSM/GPRS/EDGE in Tampa.  A trip to the local ATTWS store the other day
and a good knowledgeable rep. informed me that the overlay of 800
(A/K/A 850) GSM is in progress in this market and should be done in a
few weeks.  That may improve signal in some locations.

AH

Thanks for the info! I wonder if the 800 overlay will help things in
Hillsborough County. I found a map that indicates some serious voids in GSM
coverage for the guy I am trying to help.

I know it works on the I=4 corridor in Hillsborough, but when I exited
just east of Plant City heading north, coverage soon faded (about 5-10
miles) so I am guessing they still haven't converted all of the towers
in this market to GSM yet... should soon though since they are pushing
the product hard now.

Thanks! That's part of the are I am concerned about, so it really helps
to know.
