On Sprint I would dial *4 for customer service and to check minutes
remaining. I'm on AT&T and have tried 611, *4, 0 and none seem to
work. Do I have to dial the standard AT&T 800 number for this or is
there a shortcut?

Just 611 (no *s) should do it.  Make sure the display reads AT&T or AT&T
Wireless or you will get another service providers customer service.

It will get you to Customer Care.  If you are using GSM then they could also
tell you minutes used.

Thank you.  I didn't think you could do it for TDMA.  BTW, what would you
say the average wait time is for GSM care?

45 minutes.

Here is an easier way: get rid of AT&T switch to Tmobile, then hit #646#
and see your minutes right on your phone for free. Why AT&T is unable to
implement something sensible (and free) to check your minutes has always
been beyond me

Of course, the purpose of your cell phone is so you can be dependent on
your personal computer to see how many minutes it has left

You think they really want you to see how many minutes you have used? Why so
you will stop talking?

Adding a few common sense features like this might get the 45 minute
average GSM CS wait time down a little by automating the process
people are calling in asking CS to look up.

Yeah, #646# is very helpful in helping you watch your mins. You don't
want to go over or you're toast.

However, it sucks because it is always like 12hrs behind what you've
actually used.  What's the point of that?  I'm pushing near my 1000
min mark and I don't know precisely how many mins I have left as of
this moment.

The stupid thing is obivously somehwere in their system they know
EXACTLY how many mins I've used. You can bet they won't lose track of
a single minute you use.
