I've read the ATTWS/Cingular merger will probably not be complete for 10
months. this almost certainly means billing systems and call plans won't be
integrated until then, but does anyone think that the coverage areas might
be combined earlier via more robust roaming agreements? I'm currently a ATT
TDMA customer and am looking to move to GSM for a number of reasons, and am
wondering whether I should stay with ATT (no rollover, but more anytime
minutes/$ and cheaper 2nd line, free incoming messaging, more EDGE markets)
which has pretty marginal coverage in my opinion or move to Cingular and get
much better coverage (Texas in particular) now. If I don't move I also save
the activation fees. In 10 months, I'm sure it won't make any difference,
but I'm not sure I want to wait that long for decent coverage. Opinions?

All that means is the purchase will be completed for 10 months. It will
probably be several months after that before they truly become "one"
company. This is just a guess based on past industry experience, but they
won't start any systems integration until after everything is official.

I personally think there's a good chance that cross-roaming agreements will be
put in place in the meantime, but only time will tell.

I do. I think roaming will be the first thing to be provided freely between the
carriers since that is only a matter of a paper change.

Data base entries and billing changes. Not just a paper change.
