Rumor Mill: AT&T Wireless subscribers defect en masse
According to a report from Bloomberg, AT&T Wireless may post its first net
quarterly subscriber loss as the carrier's customers flock to rivals like
Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile. AT&T Wireless may lose as many as 201,000
subscribers in the first quarter. The carrier is struggling to attract new
users as it faces acquisition by Cingular Wireless sometime later this year.
Analysts claim that the combination of the uncertainty of the Cingular
merger, the carrier's poor customer support, and the wide availability of
number portability could work to substantially shrink AT&T Wireless'
subscriber base before the end of this year.
Meanwhile, Cingular is powerless to do anything to stop the subscriber
defections until it completes its merger with AT&T Wireless. Some insiders
speculate that AT&T Wireless could have substantially fewer subscribers by
the time its merger with Cingular is complete, adding fuel to criticisms
that Cingular overpaid for its U.S. rival. At the same time, Verizon
Wireless claims that AT&T Wireless is "melting down" under the combined
pressure from the Cingular merger and the carrier's poor level of service.

Sounds like the obvious, not a rumor.

How do all the ATT Wireless subscribers get out of the remainder on their
contracts?
Maybe they're just fed up with contracts in general and plan to "upgrade" to
a prepaid plan next! 0;-)

Rumor is all it is until you can show something concrete. You don't
seem to have such so all you're doing is adding fuel to the fire. No
better than a bunch of hens chatting over the backyard fence.

Doesn't sound like a rumor, sounds like a good projection.
Twill also be interesting to see if Sprint really is gaining all that
much.

Why would one number be a good projection, yet you question another? I know
its going to suck to be you if Sprint does show a healthy growth- your
bashing of their numbers has become somewhat boring.

I wonder how Cingular's net adds are going? Perhaps people who are
looking for GSM service are dismissing AT&T Wireless and going
straight to Cingular?

Let me see...
the article states that at the completion of the merger Cingular will be the
largest wireless company in the U.S. Also states that Verizon and Sprint
are aggressively going after business accounts. Sounds like business as
usual and typical business politics... It wouldn't surprise me to see
Cingular aggressively going after business clients too. Also wonder if
Verizon and Sprint are a little worried about the size that Cingular will be
after the merger. For sure, if ATT & Cingular can get their CS problems
taken care of things might be different as far as losing clients.
My $.02 worth

T Mobile is not in panic mode and they are the smallest of the national
players. So if they are not worried, nobody should be.

TMobile has a respectable churn rate, and percentage gain of customers.
That is not the case with AT&TWS or SprintPCS.

Too bad they couldn't churn you permanently.

Thats a given. But the customer drain continues, as does the
"we don't care" attitude at ATTWS.
