i want to get att wireless but i don't want to pay 50 dollars a month plus
the phone and ending up not being able to use does anyone know if att has
good (gsm) coverage in cedar rapids, iowa
BruceR - 03 Apr 2004 05:08 GMT
Even if someone tells you "yes" you won't know how well it work for you.
You do have a trial perod to test it.

But with Activation and being charged for a full month, such "Free
Trials" typically cost around 4100.
BruceR - 03 Apr 2004 11:20 GMT
If you reread my post you'll note I didn't say it was a FREE trial only
that there is a trial period. Who told you that there's a free trial? I
haven't seen that offered either in their stores or online. Was it an
independent dealer that offered you a free trial? Everyone I've seen is
a trial period where you can cancel your contract but still have to pay
for the trial period monthly and usage charges.

Fine, but the OP should know that it will likely cost around $100.

You'd rather keep that a secret?
BruceR - 03 Apr 2004 11:28 GMT
No secret. I guess I just thought the guy might actually read and
understand what he's doing when he signs up and not expect something for
nothing.

Most folks expect a charge, few read all the microtype and fully
comprehend that the trial period will likely cost them around $100.

And I don't think its reasonable to tell people to "go test it you get a
trial period", as that doen't tell the full story, and you are being
totally disingenuous in your response, about trials.
BruceR - 03 Apr 2004 21:17 GMT
You're certainly entitled to your opinion. I just made the point that
trials are availble from carriers as something the OP could investigate.
I suppose I could have asked for their address, driven over, picked them
up and taken them to a carrier and read the terms aloud to them, but the
fact that they posted here led me to believe they were reasonably
intelligent and didn't need that level of handholding.

Its not a matter of ahand holding, and you are entirely disingenuous to
say that. Most folks are shocked to learn that they will be charged a
full months service for a 4 day trial, on top of an activation fee.
So it adds up to ~ $100. And its trivial to mention that in passing.
Convienient not to mention it, isn't it.
BruceR - 03 Apr 2004 23:09 GMT
Convenient for whom? I couldn't care less whether ATT makes a dime or
not. I don't work for them, own their stock or receive any remuneration
from them in any way, shape or form.

Then quit telling people how easy it is to "test" out an AT&T phone
without mentioning it'll cost them upwards of $100. or least quit
bellyaching if I fill in the details you omit.
BruceR - 03 Apr 2004 23:50 GMT
never bellyached... never said it was free... never even said it was
easy... just an available option.  Who on earth would expect something
to be free?

BTW, I have to say that I really do enjoy our banter. Thank you!

You're welcome, I appreciate discussion with someone who doesn't resort
to insults. A lot of apologists are like that at the Sprint PCS group,
who quickly resort to 4 letter words.

Where are they advertised as "free"?  The closest I've seen is a 'no
obligation' trial.

Not even the CTIA Consumer Code mentions a free trial, but does say that the
customer could be responsible for usage charges.

I understand how you feel.  I was thinking of switching to T-Mobile and
didn't want to spend $100 either.  So I went to their store and was able to
"borrow" a loaner phone after giving them some personal information and a
credit card number.  I went to the manager to do this.   I took the phone
home and checked out the signal strength on it and made a call and
discovered the reception was fine.  I then took the phone back (went with
AT&T instead anyhow).  Another suggestion is you can buy a cheap used gsm
AT&T phone off eBay and don't activate the service - just check out the
signal strength and make a couple 611 calls (at least Cincinnati Bell
Wireless lets you call 611 for free) - then just resell the phone on eBay to
recoup your loss or keep as a spare and get whatever free phone AT&T gives
you when you sign up.  You could also sell the more expensive phone on eBay
and make yourself a couple bucks!  Kind of a hassle tho.  DonnaB
