Trip report: GSM between Minneapolis and Virginia, MN

Took a road trip to the cabin this past weekend to clear some stuff from
storage. Had my trusty v600 along with the GSM America plan from ATTWS. This
is what I found:

ATTWS service from Minneapolis to about North Branch, with a couple of small
dead spots (roamed briefly on T-Mobile). After North Branch, picked up what
the v600 called "Cellular One DCS." This is Dobson's GSM850 overlay. Had
consistently good service (average signal from -70 to -95) all the way from
the North Branch area through Cloquet (did not go directly to / through
Duluth - went just to the west and picked up US 53). Service got a little
thinner in many spots (-105 to -110) south and again north of Cotton on 53,
and at one other point before Evelyth. Signal was quite good in the range
cities, and extended up US 53 to hwy 169 towards Tower. Again, signal got
weak at times, but whenever I checked, I had at least 1 bar. Got north of
Peyla (the road at the "Y-store" about 6 miles before Tower), and about
halfway to Fectos point on 77. Lost signal at the storage place a couple
times, but picked it right back up upon getting back on Angus Rd / 77 on the
way back to 169. Did a network scan once in Virginia and got Cell One and
T-Mobile. Did not get a chance to do a scan anywhere else.

For anyone who travels to that area of MN, this is good news for GSM users -
especially ATTWS users...

interesting .... I wonder if GPRS data also would have worked.

I forgot to mention, I tried it around Hinckley and the Mmode main screen
came right up...

What phone were you using? I need a new phone that does 850 & 1900 mhz and can
do net monitor that yours obviously can do.  I picked up a S56 Siemens on ebay,
have yet to get it unlocked or further explored.   PS: do you vacation in the
crosslake area too?  jay

I spend some time in both the Gull Lake and Pelican Lake areas, and
occasionally get up to Crosslake. I have not yet been up there to test the
Dobson GSM.

I'm using a v600 with the UK Engineering Flex (it has a netmonitor). The
netmonitor is not included with the stock ATTWS software, but all you need
is the Motorola USB cable and its easy enough to get all the necessary
software from the net. Just be careful flashing and flexing the phone :)

I'm not sure what a UK flex is, but i'll see if i can figure it out.  Have you
been in my video rental store in crosslake?  I seem to recall the name over the
years.  I'm at home now or I'd look in my customer list.  How do you get a UK
flex v600?  thanks for your assistance.  Jay

Guess i reread your post and see you have a v600, are you using some kind of
net monitor function or just estimating the signal levels?  Thanks.  Jay

Thanks, Jon.

I find it interesting that DCOC's 310-560 GSM 850 overlay is using the
"Cellular One DCS" (or GSM World indicates just "Cell One") handset
code.  WWC has owned & licensed the Cellular One brand for several
years now, and considering that WWC is also deploying its own GSM
850/1900 overlay, it seems somewhat ironic that WWC would not retain
that handset code for itself.  But according to GSM World, WWC's
310-590 overlay displays handset code "ROAMING" - ostensibly a nod to
the fact that the overlay is exclusively for GSM roamers, not for
WWC's own TDMA or CDMA subs.

That is a bit odd. I didn't look into the handset codes that closely, but
the WWC handset code makes sense insofar as they have no intention of
selling GMS service 'natively.' DCOC and WWC do use the same handset system
name displays for TDMA ("Cell One") - at least in MN, so I guess the use of
"Cellular One DCS" by DCOC doesn't surprise me so much as WWC's *not* using
it does surprise me - a bit...
