AT&T Mississippi

I'm just looking for a few opinions here. I live in Jackson, MS and
currently have Cingular service. I'm looking to change providers because
Cingular's family plans don't really offer anything worthwhile, I hate the
phone I currently have, and I can't access my voicemail outside of my home
area. I have talked at length with customer and technical support without
resolving the voicemail issue.

Anyway, I know that no wireless service is perfect, and I've seen both
praise and complaints about most of them. Since I can't get Verizon service
in Mississippi (Can you hear me now? Not if you're in Mississippi!?!) I was
considering one of the AT&T GSM plans. My questions are...

Are the AT&T GSM plans worth the money and a two year agreement?

Does AT&T have decent coverage in Mississippi and the southeast in general?

Since there is a roaming agreement with Cingular will I still be able to get
similar coverage to what I currently have? Is the Cingular network changing
from TDMA? I thought I remembered seeing that somewhere...

Any problems with voice mail outside of home area?

What GSM phones are best for simply using them as phones (no frills needed
such as camera, text, etc.)?

Is the NEC 525 any good? I know it has a camera, but it seems to be a decent
phone from the reviews I've read, it's one of the few flip-phones they
offer, and it's currently free after rebates at LetsTalk.com if you sign a
two year agreement.

Thanks for any help. I just don't want to get caught in a contract and have
to suffer for two years...

Only if you are absolutely certain you would never have to deal with
customer service.

I can't speak to Missippi directly but the "Southeast in general" has good GSM
as long as you aren't WAY off the beaten path. Although, I have been way out in
the middle of what I would have considered "no-where" and still had GSM
service.

Keep in mind, like all services, YMMV!!!!

What do you mean you can't access your voicemail?  *VM does not work
if you're off the Cingular network, you just dial your own number.
What happens when you do that?

No.  AWS is a horrible choice for MS.  Take a look at their GSM
coverage and you'll see what I'm talking about
(http://www.attwireless.com/gsmamerica/index.jhtml).  They're purely
PCS in MS and only cover the Jackson metro and about 5 highway
corridors.  Absolutely nothing inbetween!

Cingular has not overlaid GSM yet in MS, so there's no fallback to the
Cingular network for AWS GSM customers.  Cingular is supposed to
overlay GSM this summer however, at that point AWS customers will
enjoy the much stronger Cingular network in MS.

If you absolutely hate Cingular, you should consider ALLTEL or
Cellular South.  Stay away from AWS in MS!  Or wait until Cingular
completes the GSM overlay, at which point your problems will probably
disappear.

What I mean is that when I dial my own number while still on the Cingular
network but outside of my local calling area (basically outside of
Mississippi) I get a message that the call can not be completed as dialed. I
have a preferred nation plan (if that still exists) so I shouldn't really be
limited to a local calling area. Every time I talk to customer service they
ask questions about entering the password. I've explained time and again
that I can't even place the call, but that doesn't seem to register with
them. I got so far once as to talk to a tech support guy, but he told me
that it was because I had changed my password. What good is a password if
you can't change it? This is a bunch of nonsense to cover up the fact that
they don't know why it doesn't work. However, I can call from my wife's
phone and check my mail with no problem so it's not the password. By the
way, her voice mail has the same problem. We just can't check it from our
own phones. Ever heard of this???

Thanks for the other info. After doing some research I've come to the
conclusion that Cingular may not be so bad after all. I found out that they
should have the GSM network in Mississippi by this summer as you said. They
are also coming out with a new pricing scheme this month with some additions
like mobile-to-mobile minutes and unlimited nights and weekends. If I can
get the voice mail problem solved I'll probably go with a Motorola v400 and
one of their new National GSM plans. It should be competitive with most
plans and includes roll-over minutes as well as roaming and free long
distance so I should be able to pick up T-mobile or some other provider even
in the areas where Cingular hasn't finished its GSM overlay.

Thanks again,

Scott

Might not be a bad idea if you get a GAIT phone to access GSM and TDMA.
Have you thought about T-Mobile?  They have family plans and a much better
GSM buildout in the southeast.
