SPCS's data service works great. If you are in a SPCS ( and most
reseller) area's it works. I have had litte problems with it on my
PDA or my laptop with my datacard. Speedwise SPCS tops out 144-153K
with real-world speeds averaging 100K. SPCS does not officially allow
you to use PCS phone as a data modem, as they want you to purchase a
datacard for laptop use and purchase the data feature on your handset
or PDA for an extra $15 - $20 a month. SPCS is definately faster than
ATTWS's GPRS service, I don't have an EDGE enabled phone to test EDGE,
but depending on the device, my understanding is that EDGE can burst
up to 230K with real world speeds of about 130K. This would make the
pipeline bigger than SPCS. I got a note in a recient SPCS bill saying
that SPCS is upgrading its data network - A SPCS press release's said
they are planning to go to data speeds of up to 2.5M systemwide by the
end of 2005. Verizon has stated it will have its higher speed network
active in its major markets by the end of the summer - which would
give possible data speeds of 300 - 500K.

I have ATT voice (with an 8 dollar a month GPRS/wap account). I have a
Sprint datacard with unlimited that my wife and I share. The Sprint card
has worked well, but a little more speed is always nice.

All AT&T Wireless GSM sites are now Edge compatible. Additional EDGE radios are
being added to all sites across the country right now.

It does no good to be compatible, if the capability is not in your local
network.
