As posted earlier:

"...August 18th AT&T Wireless is increasing their call charge for 411
calls to $1.50 from the current $1.25. The July bill has this
mentioned as notice. This is considered 'Change of Service Terms' ..."

...sparking endless, mainly frivolous debate on yes you can no you
can't terminate your contract without penalty.

Now, let's hear the truth. Please post success/failure reports on
ACTUALLY, IN REALITY being able or not able cancel contracts
penalty-free.

With all due respect, those would not even necessarily be reality (the facts),
much less "the truth", just unconfirmed anecdotal reports, which might be made
up out of whole cloth.  (What a shock.  Not.  Because this is Usenet.)

Even if someone reported being let out of a contract without penalty, that
might have been done just for goodwill reasons in that particular case.
Likewise, someone may have failed to get out simply due to the luck of the
draw.

Only a competent legal opinion would be truly meaningful, and only a court
ruling would be "the truth."

I was an ATT customer a while back, and got out of my contract for this
EXACT reason.  It states in your contract that you can get out when they
make certain changes.  They didnt like me getting out of it, but in the end
they had no choice but let me out.

I've heard reports of some people not being able to get out, but that if you
call back, and get the right rep, you can indeed get out.  That is only what
I've heard.

If you live in  the bay area or San Diego I wouldn't recomend it, as ATT GSM
is the best provider available.  But its your option to try someone else
out.  I did and have been regretting it ever since.  I will switch back to
ATT GSM ASAP.  Good luck.

Curious which provider you switched to.  I was just about to make the jump
(away from AT&T GSM) and then they signed the cross-roaming agreement with
Cingular... can you say life is good now?  Yes!  Dramatically better than
pre-Cingular AT&T, and considerably better than TDMA AT&T.

Others might not agree with me, but I am currently with Verizon, and I think
they are just horrible.  I get dropped calls no matter with route I take
home.  With ATT GSM I very rarely got a dropped call.

At about 3pm, my phone starts cylcling in and out of service.  Its not the
phone, as I went to the VZW store and got a new one.  Also my parents phone
does the same exact thing.

Overall I would say I am VERY dissatisfied with VZW, and like ATT GSM.  Also
keep in mind, I liked them pre cingular and pre 850, so ATT GSM is probably
a whole lot better now.

That's my experience as well, particularly in the Tri-Valley area.  My
daughter is now on Verizon, and she frequently has no service problems.

My experience as well, even though my phone doesn't support 850, which would
undoubtedly give me even better coverage.

Indeed, now that ATTWS has free roaming on Cingular, the value of which far
exceeds the small increase in the Directory Assistance fee, which itself still
remains a relative bargain.

I   use infone.com for directory assistance.  It is a little cheaper than
411 and works pretty good.  I'd be interested in seeing other posts on third
party directory assistance companies as well.

YES!  I GOT OUT OF IT YESTERDAY.  WHEN YOU CALL, TELL THEM THAT THE
PRICE CHANGED, IT'S A CHANGE TO THE CUSTOMER AGREEMENT.  QUOTE
SECTIONS 6 AND 14.  THAT'S ALL.  THEY AREN'T EVEN ARUGING IT ANYMORE.
APPARENTLY MANY HAVE ALREADY GOTTEN OUT.  BY THE WAY, ACCORDING TO THE
CUSTOMER AGREEMENT, YOU HAVE TO HAVE CALLED IN WITHIN 20 DAYS OF THE
CHANGE BEING STATED.  (20 DAYS FROM THE DAY THAT YOUR JULY INVOICE WAS
PRINTED).  AS FAR AS THE PEOPLE I KNOW WHO ALSO GOT OUT, ALL CALLED
WITHIN 20 DAYS).  ONE PERSON WAS DENIED BECAUSE HIS BILL WAS PRINTED
ON THE 17TH OF JULY (ABOUT A MONTH AGO), AND THEREFORE WAS REFUSED
CANCELLATION AS IT WAS MORE THAN 20 DAYS.
