Real Coverage Maps ??

Is there any site, service, or other method -- besides buying each
phone & service -- to find out what the true coverage is in a
partucular area?  The maps from the providers often show an
area as "covered" even when it's not.  I was wondering if there
is a third-party company that tests & makes maps of the
coverages.
