Looking to move to GSM but I want to be able to use the phone as a "
link " between my laptop and present ISP to download email, I know it's
slow and I'm not interested in browsing. I want to be able to use my
minutes from the bucket without additional data charges.

How can it be done?

Cant be done, not supported. They want you to use GPRS more money for them.

That's called CSD (Circuit Switched Data).  It cannot be done on ATTWS (not
supported), but can be done on Cingular (now the same company).

That's good news. Now I need a resource to go to that will help me track
down a phone that supports CSD. I just want a simple phone - no
cameras,etc.

Most GSM phones support CSD -- just check for "data capable" and the means you
want for your connection (cable, IrDA, Bluetooth).

I recommend Ericsson R520M. Supports both CSD and GPRS, connects with computer via IR
or Bluetooth, standby battery time of several days and available on Ebay for less
than 100 bucks.

It might be a bit large if you are looking for something to carry in your pocket, but
if you will be carrying the computer anyway it shouldn't be an issue. It is not
heavy, just big.
