Apple Settles iPod Lawsuit for $10 Million
Apple will pay to license patents from Burst.com, after two years of
litigation over compression technology.

Apple has agreed to settle a patent dispute with Burst.com, ending two
years of litigation.

Under the agreement, Apple will pay Burst.com US$10 million and get
access to Burst.com's patent portfolio, with some exceptions, Burst.com
said in a press release. Apple won't have access to four of Burst.com's
current and pending patents, including three pending patents relating to
digital video recorder (DVR) technology. Court costs, expenses and
attorney's fees will reduce the proceeds to Burst.com to $4.6 million.

Burst agreed not to sue Apple over current or pending DVR patents,
Burst.com said.

Burst alleged that Apple infringed four patents for transmission of
compressed audio and video files in iTunes, iLife, QuickTime and the
iPod.

So, Apple = Microsoft. If they want it, they just take it--and dare
anyone to do anything about it. On the off chance they are caught AND
lose the lawsuit, they pay.

Overall, they pay less using this business model than if they actually
hired engineers to invent things and/or licensed technologies BEFORE
implementing them in products that they sell to the public.

So, Oxford--it looks like Apple didn't actually invent the iPod at all,
did they? They just stole someone else's technology.

And got caught.

Just like they stole Cisco's iPhone name.

On his own, Jobs has NEVER done anything EXCEPT steal things and sell
them. Woz did all the inventing and creating, Jobs just sold what he could
leech off of Woz or others. Jobs makes all the appeals to "creative types"
mainly because it eases his own guilt complex over his personal record of
being little more than a glorified thief and huckster. Even his bashing of
MS started with his disdain for Gates actually writing code and getting his
hands dirty with the details.

Apple stole nothing:

"In January 2006, Apple sued Burst.com in the U.S. District Court for
the Northern District of California, seeking a judgment that the
Burst.com patents were invalid and not infringed."

Apple merely decided it's much cheaper to pay the nuisance fee of $4.6
million than to pay lawyers and waste management time to defend the
suit for years. It costs beaucoup and disrupts IT to produce years of
email.

Microsoft on the other hand paid Burst $60 million.
