A sweet phone gets even sweeter with a new free service from

160 music channels on FlyTunes now include top rated Radio Paradise,
SmoothJazz.com, RauteMusik.fm, and 53 music channels from 181.fm. In
the talk category,

FlyTunes has also added NPR, TheScore.com, and local weather in the
top 15 U.S. markets.

Sam Abadir, FlyTunes CEO, said in the press release. "In the near
future, we're going to continue to sweeten the experience by adding
more great content, new features like time shifting and station
personalization, and support for other internet-enabled mobile
devices."

So if you can only afford an Internet tablet like the Nokia 800 there
is hope that eventually you can come to the FlyTunes party.

Nokia n800 owners are listening to the thousands of FREE music streams
with the Maemo Linux port of Streamtuner, the Shoutcast/Xiph/Live365
strream browser for mplayer that makes station selection easy.

No newsgroup spammers are necessary.

You might get the poor saps with iPhones to buy into it....They're used
to paying for everything...

I'm not familiar with it. What does it offer?

Oh, I get it! It's a web-based service that allows you to listen to the
same streams other phones could already listen to. It's nice to know your
phone is finally catching up to what other phones can already do.

So far, I'm not sure I see see a need to. I can already access those
streams directly, and plenty of other "aggregator" sites collecting feeds
in one convenient location, like tuned.mobi already exist.

But thanks for the update. Now you have access to the streaming sites
everyone else has, you be sure to let us know when your phone actually gets
push e-mail, local document storage and bluetooth GPS and A2DP support like
the rest of us, too. You'll have a real smartphone there one of these days
now, I'm sure of it! We're all rooting for you!

And when you select the iPhone it blocks a lot of the stations as the edge
network cant stream the higher bitrates stations.

That's crazy as most iPhone users connect to wifi, not the crappy EDGE ATT
provides. Well, it's nothing new, I suppose...(c;

The N800 comment caught my eye. We use Streamtuner, ported from Linux. It
just got a Shoutcast plugin upgrade when Shoutcast changed it's access
method. Streamtuner gives us Shoutcast, Xiph (about 16,000 stations), and
Live 365, which is mostly subscription, now, so doesn't really count.

Streamtuner is just a browser for these servers, not a player. When you
click a station, Streamtuner hands off the URL to mplayer, one of Linux's
best media players.

My only complaint is when I'm walking around listening to Swiss Radio Jazz
in the mall, its higher speed, great sounding stream sure eats a Motorola
Z6m battery pretty fast.....(c; A couple of hours and you're ready to get
back to the car to recharge. The N800 will run about 4 hours like this.
