We will be going on a cruise of the British Isles and I
called ATT to see what, if anything, I need to do.

After hearing the sales pitch, I decided to do nothing.

I can sign up for International and there will be a monthy
charge added to my bill and I will be only be charged
about $1.10 a minute. If I do nothing I will only be charged
about $1.25 a minute.

We only plan on using the ATT cell for emergencies so
I don't see the need or advantage to change anything.

I was also advised to keep the phone OFF as I will be
charged for normal incoming calls and to avoid checking
messages at $1.25 a minute.

I didn't think that there was any monthly charge to enable International
Roaming. It' just expensive if you make or receive calls.

They told me it would add something like $5.99 per month that will be
probably be $10 after the rip off ATT usage fees that like to call taxes

You'll only be charged for incoming calls you answer, I believe..
Might be worth keeping the phone on incase you know it's someone who's
only going to call you in an emergency.

I don't think that is right unless they've fixed something
recently. Because of the screwed up way GSM conditional
forwarding is done you usually also get charged International
roaming rates if you let incoming calls ring through to
your voice mail (it may be double the price, actually, since
you pay your company to deliver the call to the foreign network
and then pay the foreign network to forward the call back
to your voicemail in the US). The only way I've found to
fix this is either to unconditionally forward the phone to
voice mail, in which case incoming calls never ring the phone,
or to try to turn off voicemail forwarding altogether, which I've
found not to always work with a US SIM. Or to leave your phone
turned off, which I guess is easiest for AT&T to explain.

To tell the truth I haven't had one of those charges for quite
a while since I try to keep my phone forwarded while travelling
except for the rare occasion when I want to answer incoming calls
on it. I have in the past been charged for calls I let ring
through to voicemail, however, so I'm sure it used to work that
way.

Evan,

Do I have to have International roaming activated to use
the phone from the British Isles?

ATT wants an additional monthly fee to turn it on so I can
get the cheaper rates.... that are not that cheap.

I might be misunderstanding something here, but as I understand it,
turning on international roaming is an entirely different step from
adding their discount roaming package. Only the discount roaming
package has additional fees.

Thanks .... I will call ATT for clarification. The person I talked to may
have given be bad information.

I should mention that I'm not 100% clear on AT&T's current policies, I
am only going by information I was given last time I went tire kicking
at an AT&T store -- It could be me with the bad information.

I'm a Canadian, but was (and still am) looking for decent US based
service as I spend a significant amount of time in the US.
