My Treo is an unlocked device. I got it that way direct from Palm
because at the time I wasn't sure if I was going to stay with AT&T or
switch to T-Mobile. I've stayed with AT&T and even renewed my contract
since then. The last time I traveled out of the country was to Canada,
more than five years ago. The last time I traveled anywhere else
outside of the US was 22 years ago.
While being able to unlock the iPhone would be nice if I ever needed
to, it's not an immediate concern.
I can live with a 16GB iPhone, I can set iTunes to sync only most of my
media at a time randomly rather than all of it. But I'd rather have
32GB and be able to carry all of it with me.
If the 16GB unit costs $299, I'd pay $399 for 32GB.

You aren't alone, that probably describes 95% of Americans. I have
to travel, however, so stuff like Euro 3G and having a phone which
will take any SIM matters a lot to me even if most people won't
care.
I'm way off-contract with AT&T but I do have a contract with Hutchison
in Hong Kong which is up in July. I see from
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2008/06/09hutchison.html
that they are selling the iPhone as well, so I think maybe I'll shop
there instead. Phones in Hong Kong are typically sold unlocked since
almost everyone travels "internationally" (you can't go more than 20
miles without ending up an another "country", for mobile phone
purposes if not politically).
