They need to figure that out soon for more reasons than
that. When you buy a subsidized phone California sales
tax is computed on the full unsubsidized price.
I'm also wondering how Apple is going to sell these phones
in its own stores. If the price depends on your contract
status with AT&T then the Apple store will need some way to
determine that, and will need to take your social security
number for a credit check, just like any other AT&T dealer.
That's a whole lot different than what Apple stores do now.

If you could self-activate on the original iPhone, surely in-store
activations shouldn't be too hard for AT&T and Apple to muster up, the
pieces to the puzzle are the same.

Yup. The $199 price is only for original iPhone owners.

To be eligible you'll need to be an owner of the original iPhone.

TOTALLY wrong. You either need to get a new 2 year contract or be near
the end of a current 2 year contract with any ATT phone; or be a
current iPhone user anywhere in their contract.

everyone gets the $199 price, but they will need to sign a new 24 month
contract.

and they need to pay $5.00 more for the data service per month for those 24
months even if your area doesn't have 3G.

Not everyone. Qualified customers only (per AT&T), and ATT hasn't
clarified that yet.
