These are the biggest capacity standard batteries I've ever seen. They test actually OVER 11 ampere-hour. That's a LOT of power in a 'D' cell rechargeable! Most manufacturers, like the Bunny Battery Company, put an AA cell in a plastic 'D' cell case, a ripoff!
Two of these 1.2V beasts is $28 from this distributor and will recharge over 1000 times (Ni-Mh).
Now, if we were to make a custom BELT out of 3 these 'D' beasts and put a little FruitFone connector on a tiny cord to the belt, we might JUST have a decent long-running 3G! With this much battery, it may improve the transmitter, too...(c;
My best quickcharger is gonna have a heart attack from running all night to pull up these beasts....hee hee.
The 'C' batteries are 5 AH! The AAA are 800 mAH!
POWER is our FRIEND!

I'd go with "http://www.all-battery.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2162".
"Only" 10,000 mAH, but 2 for $16 rather than 2 for $29 for the 11,000 mAH.
I've bought their C cells and they're fine, though I don't have a charger that can measure capacity.

The mAH rating for those D cells was the same as the C's, (as was the price, so you really weren't being "cheated.")

There are a lot of very low capacity D cells on the market, but I doubt if they would bother to do the spacer thing.

They just put a little 2.7AH cell in a big 'D' sized plastic case. All the big guns are doing it. The shelves at any Wally World or Best Buy are full of them.

On the other hand, I don't even own a rechargable D cell anymore. My oft- used, high-drain, devices either use proprietary batteries (cameras, cellphones, etc.) or AAs. My D-powered devices (flashlights, boom-boxes) are used so seldom, or in emergencies (power failures, etc.) that disposables that don't require being recharged every few months even if not used make more sense.
I guess I'll just buy some cheap AA-to-D converters fom Geeks.com if I ever need rechargable D-cells- if that's good enough for Eveready, it's good enough for me! ;-)

Maybe that was too far back before your time....
It wasn't any good if it didn't wake people up at 3AM inside their sealed up houses....daring them to come out to fight.
You needed a huge afro to go with the radio....(c;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIe9a9VGyZc&feature=related Sharp and Sansui made some great ones. They used to compete to see who could have the HIGHEST model number, a very important feature.
Commercial units had their limitations on power, so many built their own out of car stereos and components powered by huge gellcells: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_0IaCmsie4&feature=related
