Say it ain't SO!  Apple's marketing division <gasp!> is STRETCHING THE
TRUTH?

http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/08/27/apple-iphone-ad-banned-in
-the-uk/

Even with its flaws, the iPhone is pretty impressive. But from the
first, Apple¹s TV ads for the device have made it look a little better
than it is. Maps pop up without any annoying delay. Apps download almost
instantly. Calls are never ever dropped.

Now a government agency has called the company on it. According to
reports in the Guardian and the BBC, Britain¹s Advertising Standards
Authority has ruled that one of Apple¹s TV spots misleads consumers and
ordered the company to stop airing it in the U.K.

Misleading commercials, imagine that. Wow if they start banning all of them
wouldn't Tv be much nicer to watch.

My favorite commercial:

One spouse, one house; Obama 08

I haven't seen that iPhone commercial.  Can you point me to a link?

I didn't know Obama used an iPhone in his house.

Who gives a f.ck?

Just shut the f.ck up.  If you want to talk politics, go somewhere else.
Go somewhere where it's APPROPRIATE to talk politics.

Jesus Christ.  Not everything in the world is a political conversation.

John McCain doesn't know thing one about computers, let alone an
iPhone. Worse than when Bush didn't know what a Segway was.

We do get silly about this. Advertising is meant to show off the best
features of what it's selling. What if I bought that Porsche I saw zooming
down the road in the commercial and then found out I can't go 90mph anywhere
in the U.S.? Can I sue?

In the late '50's, MAD magazine did a parody about truth in advertising and
all the disclaimers that would dominate the ads. It was funny then and still
applies now.

Actually, that doesn't apply at all.  The iPhone issue is the advert
depicts a device performing far better than it does in real hands.  That
Porsche is still capable of what is depicted, it's just not legally
allowed to do that on public roads, hence the fine print "professional
driver, closed course".

Actually that's not the issue in this case- the hoopla in the UK is from
the ad's implication you can go to "anywhere" on the web, which the
objectors claim is not quite true given the lack of flash and java support.

Personally, I have no problem with the ad- it's an ad.  It's no more
misleading than that fresh juicy hamburger on a McDonald's commercial that
bore no more than a passing resemblance to the sloppy dried-out Big Mac I
wrestled from it's cardboard box last week.

I've taken the opportunity of this post to send this URL up to some

Exactly. The guy nit-picked my Porsche analogy, missing the point entirely,
but the Big Mac one seems more impenetrable.

I didn't miss your point, I got it, and I think it's stupid to believe
any advert is a valid source of reliable information about any product.
Adverts are full of innuendo, conjecture, special effects, half
truths, and it's stupid to believe this is anything worth paying
attention to.  IMO, virtually ALL adverts are unmitigated bullshit.

You mean the one with NO GAP between the bun halves....like mine.

I always point to the one I want and say, "I want one that looks exactly
like the picture."  Try that at Arby's some time.  They have flat
sandwiches for $10!

I think they should order Apple to make the iPhone work like it
does in the commercial, and give people free upgrades/replacements.

You mean *LIE ABOUT*, don't you?

>What if I bought that Porsche I saw zooming
>down the road in the commercial and then found out I can't go 90mph anywhere
>in the U.S.? Can I sue?

You *can* go 90mph somewhere in the USA.  Among many other places,
you can rent time at the Texas Motor Speedway (when there isn't a
NASCAR or other event there) and go a lot faster than 90mph (you
can rent race cars, too).  It's also possible to drive around on
your own property not subject to speed limits or having a driver's
license.

>In the late '50's, MAD magazine did a parody about truth in advertising and

It is not mandatory to show the car going 90mph.
It is not mandatory to show women, who, on seeing that you own the car,
attempt to drag the owner into the back seat so they can have his baby.
It is not mandatory to claim that your cookies are "made by elves" with
a disclaimer that they mean teamsters with Spock ears, which is *NOT*
an acceptable substitute.

Notice the subtle attack on the gPhone in that ad.
