ATT does not allow CSD, unless you pay for data. Could that be it?

The 6200 is not a UMTS device. In fact, AT&T has not anounced the
availability of any 3G devices. However, the 6200 will operate on EDGE.
When EDGE is deployed, it will more than double the average speed of GPRS.
This will make web browsing more fun/useful.

I've been able to connect just fine on a buddy's laptop and 6200. The AT&T
Connection Manager software does not work with the 6200 right now, so you
have to use the workaround. Goto: www.attws.com/support and follow the
instructions to set up "Dial Up Networking" to get on the web with your
phone. Once on the site, click set up tools, setting up laptop/PDA
conection and pick the device and laptop OS you use. The website will give
you detailed instructions to get set up.
Good Luck

I got my 6200 yesterday, downloaded and installed the Connection Mgr
software from attws.com on my Dell Latitude today, and had absolutely no
trouble making my laptop connect to the Internet with it. And I was just
using IR to connect the laptop to the phone -- I haven't bought the cable
yet. I could surf the web and I even got a VPN connection to my office and
checked my email on a corporate Exchange server. It worked great and I
didn't use any kind of workaround at all. In fact, this is the first I've
heard that what I did today didn't work. In other words, give it a shot
because it works fine for me.
Still haven't been able to get a connection with my Dell PPC though. I'll
try the link below and see if I can make it work too.

Now my question is -- did all my Internet surfing with my laptop still fall
under the included bandwidth for my $7.99/mo mMode charge? Or is there some
other "data" charge if I use the phone as a modem to surf on my laptop and
PPC? I never really understood the breakdown there. Is there a price
difference in checking email on my phone vs. checking email on my laptop via
the phone?
I just need to know if I'm going to get hammered with a big bill at the end
of the month...

AFAIK, it's the same - just remember you've got a 1MB limit.
AT&T tech suppt on their forums said the 6200 and connection manager didn't
jive well and we had "connection error 409" on my friend's Dell Latitude
laptop with XP, but DUN worked just fine. Since it's not my laptop I really
don't have time to play with it or maybe I could figure it out. I do know
connection manager uses optimization so the connection would seem faster or
maybe my buddy didn't have the most recent version. Anyways, thanks for the
input.
The Nokia 6200 is a dual-mode (GPRS & EDGE data or EGPRS) device...
Currently, AT&T is only providing you with GPRS (mMode) data service.
They have plans to upgrade to EGPRS once their EDGE network upgrade
takes place - essentially tripling the TPT of GPRS (which is typically
around 30 to 40 kbps). EDGE also doubles their voice capacity so
they'll do it mostly for the economic benefits.

Wayne,
Thanks for the info. But how come I keep reading/hearing that DFW is
currently active for EDGE on AT&T? Is that inaccurate?
Incidentally, after about a week of trying to make it work for me, I punted
the 6200s and GSM and went back to my TDMA phones today. I loved the cool
data services on the GSM network (lay the thing down next to the IR port on
my laptop and BAM I've got an Internet connection -- same with my Dell Axim)
but at the end of the day I really need a cell phone for actual voice
conversations. My experience on AT&T's GSM network was a vast amount more
dropped calls as well as far more completely garbled calls than I experience
on the TDMA side. I'm sure I'll try it again in the future but my opinion is
that it isn't ready enough for prime time for me.
Switching back was a snap too. Props to AT&T on making the "un-migration"
process a painless one.

Eric,
well, sometimes it's the price you pay for being at the "bleeding edge"
(no pun intended!)
the only EDGE network I've heard of is Cingular's Indianapolis network -
there maybe another one with AT&T I don't know about.
I think EDGE and 1XEV (CDMA flavor) will debut in more markets next year
and will be directed as a data service - ie PC cards - rather than
voice. Also, you'll see more and more dual band GSM/EDGE phones too.
best of luck,
Wayne
