I've been using my reliable Motorola V60c on ATTWS locally in the sf bay
area for over a year now, but I am expecting more frequent travel to South
Korea and Japan for extended business periods.
I hear that both countries use CDMA, so shouldn't my V60 work just fine over
there? I don't need to get a new phone and/or plan do I?
I also considered renting a cell phone from the kiosks at Incheon (Seoul)
and Narita airport, but I don't want to hassle with it and have to give
people a new temporary number to reach me. I want people to be able to reach
me overseas by just using my regular cell phone number (and vice versa).
The ATTWS website shows only a few international phones that use GSM and not
CDMA phones like my V60, which I guess means that ATTWS is trying to get me
to switch and upgrade. I don't mind doing it if I have no choice, but I'd
sure like to keep my V60.
Any ideas? Thanks...

Verizon has a roaming agreement with South Korea. There are no such options
for Japan. This is what I do (not to suggest that what I do is best for
others). I have signed up for service with kall8.com. They provide a toll
free 800 number that can be forwarded to any number on the planet at very
low rates. When I get to Seoul (Incheon) I rent a phone from SK Telecom and
then set the kall8 forwarding to this number. You can then have your
contacts in the States call the 800 number or you can forward your normal
Stateside cell phone to the 800 number and your contacts will not know the
difference. The same strategy works in Japan.

You can rent a CDMA phone in Korea which has a GSM compatible SIM slot. If
your GSM provider has a roaming agreement, you can roam on that hybrid
phone. I know Orange in the UK has such an agreement.

In Japan, Vodafone, K.K. (formerly J-Phone) has just implemented the
same thing:
