I just tried calling 411, it took them a very long time to answer and when
they did
the man on the other end sounded like Boris Karloff and wasn't very pleasant
at all.

The way AT&T talks you'd think they had all kinds of info.
I had the number of someone who called me but no name was given, to narrow
it down as to who called I asked him what company uses the prefix 291 in
Massachusetts.
AT&T uses 335, Sprint uses 338 and I wanted to know what company uses 291,
he didn't know.

By chance anyone know who uses 291 in Massachusetts?

What made you think that directory assistance would know who a prefix
belongs to?  Who knows what prefix belongs to who?  You don't even say
which area code you're looking at.

http://telcodata.us will let you know what prefix belongs with what
company.

You didn't quote the whole message, I did mention 617, however, even if I
didn't I sure did to him because he asked me.

What made me think?
Well, I did point out that AT&T brag about the 411 service and they are in
the business.
I know AT&T in the 617 are uses 335 and Sprint uses 338, you would think
they do.

Stop being so defensive of AT&T, unless your getting paid!

The link you added did the trick, now I know who called me at 2AM.

Until the ability to take your number with you when you change carriers
happens
that is a good source, after that I imagine in time it won't help much.
