WAP + AAPT not working on all sites

After getting around to chasing up why I can't get certain websites up on
my Nokia 6610, it appears AAPT don't guarantee that you will be able access
any websites via WAP, regardless if the site/page is WML compliant or not !

I try to get to
http://weather.overflow.net.au/wx.wml  or
http://www.ipswich-city.com/wap

but both sites, amongst several others that I try come up with "File format
unknown" , which according to Nokia customer care means that my network is
'blocking' those sites and that I should speak to my network provider,
which is AAPT.

Sounds to me like a "screw you, we've got you contracted for 2 years" type
of attitude from them, which was only made worse by spending nearly an hour
on hold and being passed from one extension to another... thank goodness
for it being a 1800 number!

Is there anyone else out there with a wap enabled phone that can actually
visit those above sites ?  ... if you could let us know what phone and
network you are with pls?

far as I can tell, AAPT don't offer WAP.

Are you using GPRS or CSD?

They use the vodafone network, and it's GPRS.

It sucks that AAPT swear blind that you'll never be able to get all wml
compliant website via a mobile.... well I can understand that sites with
large pages and images won't work, due to the memory limitations of mobile
phones, but I'm talking about a page that is no more than 2kb in size, and
has NO images at all.

They also use the Optus network as well, but they were trying to push
more and more onto the Optus network it was more profitable for them
when I was with them. And they also had some Telstra CDMA but this was
only because their failed/scrapped CDMA network was going to roam onto
Telstra and they were never publicablly made available from memory.

It also depends on when you signed up as there was AAPT mobile which
was run by Cellular One which was owned by AAPT. Now I beleive it's
all AAPT but the systems are all the same and it's still Cellular One
as such on the gold coast operating it.

But I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work, AAPT/Cellular One had
no control over the network other then to connect/disconnect/bar
services, add optional services and migrate. The main interaction with
the carriers is for billing information and AAPT/Cellular One do the
telephone support and billing in return for much reduced call costs.

Vodafone uses more rigid plans (or did at the time) whereas Optus you
had total control of how you set up the plans.

Some of this information may be out of date as it's nearly 4 years
since I left.

So if GPRS is working for most sites then I would possibly be looking
at an issue with the phone (perhaps try another phone????), it could
be the firmware revision. As I've shown it's unlikely to be the
network at fault.

You can ring back AAPT and push the issue and ask them to raise it
with SP support (at the approriate carrier). SP support is there for
the SP's and generally are quite knowledgable

Yeah, they were allocated numbers 0424 0xx xxx / 4xx xxx / 6xx xxx on
17/4/00 for this purpose but theyve been deallocated

I am on the Vodafone network and have an Ericsson T39m phone. I had a
look at these addresses out of curiosity and they both worked without a
fault. So if there is a problem, it would have to be either your phone
or your network provider.

Personally, I can't say much good about AAPT post-paid mobile. I was
with them (on the Voda network) for a year and found a lot of things to
be lacking. I am still trying to make sense out of their billing system,
particularly the bills I received for roaming overseas. I was happy to
say bye-byes to them and ported to Voda directly. Much better service,
better post-paid plans (at least for me) and no hassles along the lines
you describe.

Cheers!

Using a Nokia 6210 on Vodafone network those sites worked fine.  Does
seem to be a network provider problem.
