Do any of the Australian GSM mobile phone companies/service providers offer
GPRS on their PREPAID mobile phone plans?

Yes, Vodafone and Optus (but GPRS WAP/MMS only, not Internet).

Settings and pricing details here:

Jeremy,

Thanks for the lead.  Great site you've put together there!
Do you need some Telstra parameters for GPRS?  If so, I think I can help.

PS:  I tried the Virgin GPRS but it looks like they've caught up with you.
I couldn't get any joy.

Yep the Telstra GPRS settings would be great, I don't have a Telstra plan
which is why I don't have them (only a prepaid SIM because I am a "pov
druggy child"). If you could email me at jqr@ [the ausmobile domain]

Cheers

I've looked at the Communic8 website and that old-fashioned "switch" on the
front page.

Sure, I can use it to activate WAP over the voice network.

But WAP over GPRS... do you REALLY have that on your prepaid?

Telstra customer service says WAP over GPRS on prepaid ain't available.

Ok now I wouldnt be exactly sure its GPRS but here are the settings that r
in my phone;

Connection Name: telstra WAP
Data Bearer: GPRS (looked here its not GSM so I assumed its GPRS, am I
wrong?)
Access point name: telstra.wap.mnc001.mcc505.gprs
User Name : blank
Password: blank
Authentication: Secure
Gateway: 10.1.1.150
Homepage: Blank
Connection Security: Off
Session Mode: permanent

so i think its GPRS....anyone know for sure?

cheers ;)

That sure looks like GPRS.  They're the same settings that I use on my
Telstra Postpaid GPRS service.

I'll try Telstra Customer Service again... maybe something needs to be
enabled at the Telstra end.

Well, both the 125111 standard Telstra help desk and the 1300 131 816
dedicated Telstra Data help desk say that GPRS is not available from
Communic8 Prepaid.

They say that the Telstra accounting system can't handle it.

The Data guy, who sounded very knowledgeable, also added that he believes
Telstra is losing many customers to Optus Prepaid GPRS as a result of this
problem.  He really wants a fix quickly from the Telstra IT people.  I
should have asked him about whether the IT team is based in Bangalore!

So a_dude, it looks like you're very lucky!

then your gprs is activated....

thats for old accounts that havent been put in the system....

recorded the convo....and ill be demanding a refund....bloody hell...couldve
said that on their webpage...

cheers

ps...i didnt recieve my 2nd mms but YOU HAVE TO TURN OFF the NGAGE and on
again after sending urself the MMS for it to work! go figure that one out...

good luck and all else fails call this number 1300720216 (Australia only

That would be because it wants the PDP context released I would imagine (or
perhaps an IMSI-attach).

Anyway, I've asked for MMS on the prepaid to see what happens.. still
getting PDP Context Activation Reject's for the WAP AP though.

Is this tip for Optus Zoo or for Telstra Communic8 Prepaid?

I'm confused by your follow-up message.

Do you actually have GPRS working with your Communic8 Prepaid SIM?

yeah ignore the posts before...its for Optus Zoo...

but this month, MMS has been activated on Prepaid Communica8. Just go to the
site..activate MMS and the GPRS settings are sent...punch in your prepaid
number and see....last month it wouldnt work....last week it did...

thats what I done...and thats the settings its sent me...

sorry for the confusion, but at the moment, Im using Optus Zoo...showing
mates the TV on ma ngage, and seeing them red with envy....

and already 2 of em bought a 6600....lol

cheers ;)

Only povs, druggys and children are
stupid enough to bother with prepaid.

Presumably you are all of the above.

Buddy, you're boring, predictable and have nothing to contribute.

Get a real job.
