As per the header.  Either after manually locking OR just left to its own
devices, it shuts down completely.

Anyone heard of this happening?

Does the phone reboot or just shut down? Normally when the phone just turns
off it's something battery-related, but could be firmware. If the phone
reboots it's almost certainly firmware.

When the backlight times out and goes off, you can see the display faintly, then
some seconds later that goes out.  Ringing it gets a 'switched off or ..." RVA.

Too long - it doesn't come back of its own accord, needs to be powered on.
