Last time I got a phone, Telstra were awful - offering only a small
amount towards a new phone. Optus seemed very good in comparision. I see
3 are good, but there is a restricted choide of phones. So who is best
in reducing the price of your new phone when you sign up with them?

Optus?
Telstra?
Vodafone?

I'd spend around $80 a month.

Facing a similar conundrum to you, I signed with:

an Optus reseller.

$80/month should get you a totally free high-end phone, in return for a
minimum monthly contract commitment for calls.

Optus has a great reputation for that kind of deal.

"3" is best if you reside & work within a capital city.

Firstly there is no obligation to stay as long as you pay off the phone. You
can go anytime to any GSM service. Phones cost $200- $800 or from $9/mth.

Secondly there is no minimum monthly fee ... you pay nothing if you only
receive calls.

Thirdly you pay a maximum of $99 for up to $500 worth of calls. You can make
all your normal landline calls on the mobile & even give it up if you wish.

Finally their call & SMS rates are quite competitive and there is a whole
new world of 3rd generation services such as fast email, video calling, news
and internet browsing if you wish to use them!

Orange. Over 24 months you get the handset for nothing.

For a $80 spend as below, you will get almost all Telstra phones for nothing

Telstra, further and further in front ...
