of Cloncurry as well as maximising coverage along the Barkly and Flinders
Highway approaches to town.

Cunnamulla

The Late Departed Slim Dusty first performed "Cunnamulla Fella" back in
1963, with Lee Kerneghan re-recording it later years.  Now the folk at
Cunnamulla can tell the world who they are over Optus GSM.  Our equipment is
co-located at 48 metres, maximising coverage to the township and surrounds.

Benaraby and fills in coverage along Bruce Highway between our Calliope and
Iveragh Sites. It also complements coverage form our Boyne Island site along
the road between Benaraby and Gladstone.

Nothing like a Bundy and Coke to wet your whistle on a warm day although
mixing it with highway driving is not on. With our equipment raised 3 metres
above the existing tower at 38 meters, it provides quality coverage to the
Bundaberg Lowmead & Bundaberg Gin Gin main roads leading north and west from
Bundaberg respectively. This site also provide improved coverage to
Bundabergs northern coastal suburbs including Moore Park

Not sure of where to go or what to do in Melbourne?  Well, why not walk up
to an "Info booth" and seek your answers.  Whilst you are there, take a look
at the top of these unique little booths scattered around Melbourne - that
little antennae is part of an Optus GSM microcell.  Award winning in design,
it provides dominance and capacity relief along this busy stretch of road.

including covering the busy Airport to CBD route.

Swan View East

More improvements to Perth's metro area, this new site provides enhanced
coverage in and around Greenmount on Perth's' outskirts.

Coverage along Perth's major roads has just got better, with this new site
enhancing coverage along the Mandurah Road as well as providing improved
coverage to the suburb of Secret Harbour.

GSM1800 Upgrades

The sites above listed with '1800' now have additional capacity for users
with Dual Band handsets.  Users in the area will notice dramatic benefits,
especially during our ever popular yes time for both voice and data calls.
The benefits of GSM1800 are two fold - increase the number of calls that can
be made simultaneously on the network and reduce the number of dropped calls
due to congestion.

I've not heard about this before.. interesting.  Will my phone
automatically switch to GSM1800 (it's a tri-band t39)?

Is there a list of existing places that offer this?

Your phone doesn't need to do a thing. On Optus, your phone will be
listening for an incoming paging signal on GSM900, and normally when the
call has started, it will switch to GSM1800. If you ever get to look at test
41 on a dual band Nokia with NetMon, you can see the inter-band handover
statistics.

Decommissioning ?

Why would they take base stations away ?

Sometimes it's due to "people" protesting about a tower, or else if the cell
density has increased, a tower may need to be decommissioned to reduce
interference.

They dont get rid of built towers due to people protesting

Tell that to the people who had the '3' towers removed...

Stopping 3 from BUILDING a NEW tower is different to the decommissioning of
an existing, working, BTS
The Family - 12 Apr 2004 08:36 GMT
Two towers were de-commissioned during 3Q2003 in Sydney, 3 in Adelaide
during 2H2003 and there's one in Brisbane that is about to go the same way.

All this is the result court orders.  The orders followed "people power"
protests that subsequently led to local government taking action.  The local
government cases were all built around breaches of planning regulations
and/or planning approval conditions.

Good to see somebody with facts to cut down all the pissing to the wind.
Mind you the phone companies won out for the vast majority with no
sustainable objections.

A few reasons, from practical experience

Telstra had a GSM base at "VFL Park" (Waverley Park) in Melbourne. They
knocked the stadium down, so they had to move the BTS

There was also one GSM BTS somewhere in S.A. that telstra removed due to
insufficient traffic (left the CDMA BTS there though). Thats the only case
Ive seen where a BTS has been removed for economic reasons

Also if they are BTSes on private properties, like wheat silos etc,
sometimes when they change hands the new owner doesnt want the BTS. Ive seen
a few forced relocations due to this.

The Telstra site at Bondi Beach in Sydney is another example. The building
( a club) was sold and later demolished.

Yet another wasted Base station....

Obviously you don't travel around the Upper Hunter with an Optus mobile, and
obviously you don't know what's around the area this tower will fill in.

I bet your one of those who live in a capital city and think the universe
ends when the city does.

Yes i do - two power stations for one.   And yes i have used an Optus
mobile in that area (without a car kit) with no problems

Try again

In what situation ?
At either power station, any of the mines or just driving through there on
the highway at 100km/h ?
Optus has many blackspots around there, and this tower is long overdue and
far from wasted.

If not, you sure have the attitude of one.

There are bigger blackspots in Optus' NEHwy network - especially between
Tamworth & Muswellbrook.

What about the Newell Hwy as well - nothing between Coona & Dubbo

I think Telstra are not much better - I can only comment Orange to Dubbo,
and only cover is at Wellington, or at least it was last time I travelled
it.

Maybe Optus are doing this for a greater benefit than just the Highway.
Maybe they are trying to improve service the power stations, the mines and
all the other industry around the area.

Ah, now THAT explains why workers have been frantically excavating and
cabling and so on to stick these things all over the CBD... one of them
showed up outside my place a few weeks ago, and I was thinking at the time
that it seemed odd to have a 10-man crew and take four days just to plonk a
big round map on the footpath. Now I know why (and why coverage at home is
now perfect :)

I wonder if Optus knows there's a huge blackspot in the middle of Manly,
Sydney, encompassing most of the Manly Hospital district... Very
annoying...

Too bad that every one of these "Info booths" with the microcell have a
poster saying "coming soon ..." on them, and no info at all!

Actually for that I'd be blaming Melbourne City Council, who've been
happily leaving these blank for ages now. There are a few with actual info
on them, but only a few.

<long list of network updates snipped>

Thanks so much for posting this - I have an optus mobile and have been
following this thread closely.  It would be greatly appreciated if you
could keep this up, but obviously there could be a 100 reasons why you
or your employer would stop you.  For example it was dissapointing to
see the "base stations built today" site/promotion taken offline.

Maybe a weekly or fortnightly list like this one could replace it
online?

But let's not forget how this thread started - several people raised
concerns the website wasn't being updated quickly enough and you
started posting regular updates for everyone to read - great customer
service!

You wouldn't get that level of service from Telstra or vodafone.
Choice magazine was right - optus do listen to their customers more
than other carriers.

Since 99/2000 when i last used optus reguarly, they have improved by
leaps and bounds in quality of customer service and quality of
coverage.  Let's hope they keep up their investment in rural austraila
in years to come.

Jason <- a bit of an optus convert these days but they've still got a
fair way to go in some areas/states to match/better telstra.
