I just got my Orange bill for the month, which included a notice that
Orange are spending $35 million to upgrade over 50% of their base stations
between June and August to prevent congestion.  Does anyone know what
they're actually doing to the base stations?  ie. adding more antennas or
adding equipment in the comms box?

Thanks

Graham.

A number of months ago they made an announcement. Take a look at its
media releases I guess. In fact, take a look at

From memory, it's about upgrading some of teh base stations to CDMA
1XRTT. All of the newer handsets support 1XRTT. It means supper for
higher data speeds and the ability to squeeze more voice calls in.

Yawn. All of Telstra's CDMA bases are now 1xRTT

Yawn, Orange, further and further behind

Yawn, Fanboi...

At least Orange are enhancing their capabilities rather than just their
share price...

Hahah, Orange are enhancing their capabilities by adding 1xrtt?
Telstra ALREADY have 1xrtt!

Does Orange have push-to-talk? Nope!
Telstra, further and further ahead

Are you that blinkered and/or brain-washed that you cannot even comprehend
that a company's capacity to enhance their own capabilities is an absolute
value, not relative to what whatever a company up the road might be doing?
Uncle Ziggy sure did a job on you...

Orange customers will just have to cry themselves to sleep over that major
deficit. Assuming of course that they can't borrow their children's
walkie-talkies and experience this amazing new technology first hand...

Telstra account holders, further and further behind.

Hopefully doing something up upgrade the coverage to something even remotely
resembling coverage in the Newcastle and Lower Hunter areas. At the moment
what they provide is just a token effort to say they cover Newcastle, but
it's got more holes than any of the other networks.

I believe that two towers are being added - chances are that won't be
in Newcastle.

It's four new towers...double the chances! ;)

Graham.

Yes, it is 4 new base stations AND 2 new voice mail systems. I wonder
why they need 2 new voice mail systems?

The announcement on the ASX web site dated 23/01/2004 states that all
of this was meant to start in 4 to 6 weeks... hmmm!

They have piss-all customers so that is a mystery
