You dont have to commit to a contract to get a post paid.

I was also after the same thing but couldn't find a provided that offered
it. I ended up going with Vodafone Red Sim Monthly.

No Prepaid Product in Australia offers Internet GPRS, only WAP over GPRS and
MMS,
you can connect on telstra, optus and vodafone on month to month plans with
out contracts

Is it not correct to say that iSim intends to open this option? I think
I read it somewhere on their web site.

And Hutchison/3, which also has the cheapest GPRS rates 0.4c/kB casual.
($4000/GB still )
Worth considering if you don't already have a suitable handset. You'll
need a 3G handset, but they're subsidised, and faster than 2G gprs,
supposedly. Roams to vodafone gprs.

hrm, i don't think 0.4c is a whole bloody lot cheaper than
optus' 0.55c. At least with gsm i can use smaller phones
with decent battery life. :)

Ahh, I didn't realise Optus had a rate that low.
Cool.

Thanks for all the info guys.
Today I got a Vodaphone "no plans" SIM for $30. It seems all the other
deals have a minimum spend and since this will be my backup mobile for
GPRS I didn't want to spend money if I don't use it.
Vodafone look like they have the best kb rate, see
http://www.vodafone.com.au/business/bussol/databundle/databundle.jsp.
You preselect a bundle and if you go over you automatically get the
next volume rate.

I'd like to know what the difference between GPRS and WAP over GPRS is?
Anyone got a URL that explains this?
Mr ZX - 29 Jun 2004 08:36 GMT
Hi Shaun,
From my limited experience there are 2 ways of connecting to
WAP/Internet sites, CDS and GPRS. GPRS uses packets like the internet
and you are cheaged for data while CSD cherges you by time like voice
calls.
GPRS seems the most efficient for data.
Some providers only allow you to view WAP sites whch is OK for
browaing on your phone, others allow full internet acces which is what
you want if you use your mobile as modem for your notebook.
Hope this helps.

WAP can be either over the standard method @ 9600bps, or over GPRS which is
much faster. GPRS can also be used as a high-speed mobile data service,
minus the WAP browser. Not all plans on all carriers support this though
(especially prepaid ones). So simply, there is no difference - GPRS is still
being used in either case, just one uses the phone's inbuilt browser, and
one doesn't.

WAP over GPRS is limited to Port 80 (for browsing web sites). You can't use
programs like IM+, Agile Messenger, Netfront Internet Browser and so on
using WAP over GPRS.
Internet over GPRS opens up all ports, therefore allows you to use programs
that need data connections to the net (using ports other than 80).

http://www.unisonmobile.com/index.html
offers gprs and has no contract at all.
