T610 Vodafone Live! Whats this garbage?

Hi,

Just purchased a SE T610 from Vodafone last week and didn't realise that its
been
butchered with Vodafone Icons and crap... Talk about misleading....

Anyway, I know this has been discussed to death on all the forums but I
can't find
anywhere that will flash the firmware on my T610 to generic SE software.
I spoke with the service people at CarTel in Southport today and they
said it can't be done. They have tried once before and it stuffed the phone.

Any ideas? I live on the Gold Coast so somewhere close by would be
preferable.

I've also been in contact with Vodafone over this matter and they will not
refund me.
(I purchased it on an Easy Pay Plan which makes matters worse... a separate
finance company
handles that I think, like AJC) They will not exchange it either or swap it
for an unbranded T610.

So I've put in a formal complaint with the Office Fair Trading and the ITO.
I feel that Vodafone
are duping people into buying these phones without advertising the fact that
they modify
the software. When I purchased the phone, I was handed a standard SE T610
brochure to
look over and a phone to hold in my hand and look at (It had no battery in
it so I didn't know
what I was in for once I turned it on at home....).
Anyway, the brochure has clear pictures of a standard SE T610 with nice
colourful menus.
The phone I was handed in the shop had Vodafone Icons on the front and back
of the cover which
I could live with but nowhere in sight was there any advertising of the fact
that they completely
modify the Firmware to display their advertising when you switch the phone
on.

The guys at the Office of Fair Trading were quite surprised to hear about my
complaint and were
of the opinion that I had quite a good case if Vodafone cant prove that they
are not cheating their customers.

Well, that's my rant, got some steam off. Any help with replacing the
firmware would be greatly appreciated. And also, anyone else that feels the
way I do, please make your complaints heard
through the proper channels.

Cheers,

Troy.

> didn't realise that its been butchered with Vodafone Icons and crap

Ok, having recently gone through a Vodafone branded T610 myself, I know what
you mean. I didn't like all the Vodafone sh.t mainly because I was never
going to use it on the Vodafone network, and paid full price for it (I
didn't buy a connection of any sort at the time), I didn't see why they
should have their branding everywhere.

Although mine suffered bad reception
(http://users.northnet.com.au/~bbbcb/phones.jpg) and I got a refund (it was
part of a longer running issue) before I really used it much , I was
planning to take this up with them as well.

As far as getting generic firmware installed goes, it is possible, but I
would be very worried about my warranty being invalid afterwards. I asked
Sony Ericsson directly, as well as ringing one of their repair shops, who
both told me that it can be done but it's "policy" not to do it because
Vodafone licence their "customised" (!) firmware for these branded phones,
or some such crap.

It it was me in this situation (and it could easily have been recently) I
would follow through with the DFT complaint and see if you can get a generic
T610 or a refund.

If you do get a refund, I would then go into a Dick Smith shop where you can
buy a non-branded T610 for less money than Vodafone are selling them for
anyway. I paid $399 outright for the Vodafone T610, but was very surprised
yesterday when I discovered that Dick Smith are selling non-branded T610's
outright for $349 I think it was.
Brendon - 28 Jun 2004 10:06 GMT
> Dick Smith are selling non-branded T610's outright for $349 I think it
was.

Might actually be $379, but whatever it is, it's less than Vodafone's $399
price anyway.
Electro - 28 Jun 2004 10:43 GMT
Thanks Brendon,

Yeah its a worry losing my warranty but I'm willing to take the risk if
there
are no other avenues I can take. I will leave that as a last resort
though...

Cheers,

Troy.

$349 ???

Actually change that, I double checked when I was going past today, it's
$337.
Alan Cunningham - 28 Jun 2004 10:15 GMT
i heard you can take em to a SE service centre and get them
to put the latest generic firmware version on it. Might cost
you around $30+ though. Closest is prolly Brisbane.

Thanks Alan,

I tried the SE centre in Southport today with no luck.
I will call the Brisbane mob in the morning.

I'd threaten Vodafone with the small claims system.
They're pretty gung ho in BrizVegas and they will
likely force Vodafone to provide a full refund and you
can just get an unbutchered phone at Dick Smith.

I wouldn't quite say "gung ho" Rod, but you're right they certainly act on
the behalf of the consumer who's been unfairly dudded - providing they
aren't some "Pig ignorant fuckwit child" :-)

Incorrect. None of this will happen.
I await the response from the OP.

Good luck with your complaint.

Because the purchaser is entitled to know

Vodafone can argue quire simply its just customisation.
Buying a mobile phone doesnt give you a right to a certain software version.

You cant argue that you are happy with a slightly modified HARDWARE but NOT
software (firmware)

And the BrizVegas small claims system
aint gunna buy that line, dunnychild.

It does give you a right to an unbutchered phone if they
dont tell you in advance that its been butchered, fuckwit.

Wrong. As always.

The customer is legally entitled to know what he is paying for so
he can decide if what he is paying for is what he wants, fuckwit.

He did know what he was paying for. A phone. And he got it. It works.

You aint in any position to 'guarantee'

Even a fuckwit dunnychild should be able to grasp that

Nothing 'illogical' about them having to spell out what the
customer is actually buying, pig ignorant fuckwit dunnychild.

There might just be a reason for that sort of detail
being spelt out, pig ignorant fuckwit dunnychild.

Using the BrizVegas small claims system
does tho, pig ignorant fuckwit dunnychild.

How odd that so many have got what the law requires using the
