The ads are very annoying.......

But I read a post in another NG which someone did as a joke
saying that it's probably run from someone's living room.....

So what exactly would you need to run a service like this?
Remembering of course that the same number is used for
logos, tones, and various other things.....

And how easy would such a thing be to set up?

You need
- an sms gateway eg http://www.kannel.org/
- a reasonably fast server (say $5000)
- billing system
- copyright of the music/ringtones/images
- money for advertising

Items 4&5 mean these companies are often subsidiaries of record companies,
tv stations, etc.

Ah........  So these ads are more then likely for a sponsored "company"
then some schmuck doing this in their living room.  What about those
other things like Text Flirt?

Why don't you ring the companies involved and ask?

I doubt they'd tell you what equipment they use

Text flirt is usually just a computer program with AI.

Nope. The carriers do that. The company needs to have contracts with the
carriers though.

No copyright of the music sold as ringtones required.

Nope. Most are actually resellers of the big mobile content providers.

PS - another cost is the number 193 193, which costs $10,000 per year.

Well they must be doing pretty alright out of it to keep going the way
they are... Good luck to them if people "want" this kind of thing.

Yes they are.

Depends how well you want to do it.

The company that does this one is quite big. Some others are not so big.

That's the easy bit. You just have to enter a code for the piece of
content you want.

>And how easy would such a thing be to set up?

193 193's setup is not so easy and fairly expensive. Some smaller
services are much easier.
