Telstra takes on rivals with capped mobile plans
By Fleur Leyden
October 28, 2004
<http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/10/27/1098667835596.html>

Telstra has responded to what its chief executive Ziggy Switkowski
calls a "white hot" mobile phone market with plans to introduce capped
plans next month.

Training documents viewed by the Herald show that Telstra, which holds
its annual meeting this morning, intends to introduce eight
"bucket-style" plans ranging in price from $79 to $179 a month. "The
other major carriers [Optus, "3" and Vodafone] all have capped offers
in the marketplace and to remain competitive Telstra needs to respond
to these offers," the documents said. "Telstra will introduce Telstra
Capped Plans that offer customers cap amounts and a subsidised handset
included on their plan."

Telstra intends to release voice-only capped plans ranging from $79 a
month, for up to $180 worth of calls, to a $169-a-month plan with up
to $400 worth of calls. It will also unveil contract plans offering
voice, SMS and multimedia messaging, which range from $89 a month for
up to $180 of implied value, to a $179-a-month plan with a $400 value.
Call rates per 30 seconds range from 48c to 28c plus a 25c flagfall
charge per call.

By comparison, Vodafone has a $79 Super Cap, which includes billing by
the second and a 20c flagfall for up to $500 of calls, SMS, picture
messaging and data, without a lock-in contract. Its no-contract $149
Mega Cap for the same services is valued up to $1200. Optus offers a
$79 cap for up to $500 worth of calls and SMS, plus a $179 cap for
calls and SMS up to $1200 for business customers. Its flagfall is 25c
and call rates are 30c for 30-second blocks.

Hutchison's "3" is offering a $79 Cap and a $99 Cap, both with up to
$500 worth of voice calls and SMS without a lock-in contract. The $99
plan also includes video calls and free 10-minute national calls to
other "3" customers.

A Telstra spokesman noted yesterday that Telstra had led with a $99
cap plan on its CDMA network. He would not comment specifically on
Telstra's new offers.

Meanwhile, the Government said yesterday it would not participate in
Telstra's $750 million share buyback.

This is particularly ordinary, isn't it?  Where do they expect to keep/gain
market
share?

The same way they have just under 50% of market share when GSM has been out
for 11 years and there is now 6 major networks in Australia

between the words "too", "to" and "two"

Consumer apathy will only carry you so far, Michael.  Sooner or later those
people
will realise they've been screwed by Tel$tra for years.  Time for a public
flogging,
followed by the gov't sale.  Bring on the Senate vote! :)

You can talk about apathy all you like, but come on, lets get real.
11 years of true mobile competition.
Are you going to be spouting your same line in about 11 years time?

Pretty poor really,  considering many years ago they once held the monopoly
on all users

Nope, not with the mobile market which is much more fluid.

Most of the current mobile customers wouldnt even have
had a telstra mobile service when it was a telstra monopoly.

Telstra's new slogan "Telstra.  Consistantly more expensive than the rest"

What a pathetic effort.

Danny.

Ummm, don't think so. Three had a $99 cap before Telstra.

I think they are referring to Telstra's CDMA offer leading their GSM one

No, they aren't.  SMH's Fairfax stablemate The Age ran effectively the same
article, by the same journo, but said:

"A Telstra spokesman noted yesterday that Telstra had led the capped plans
race with the June launch of its $99 cap plan on its CDMA network."

Irrelevant to what that telstra spokesmonkey actually said, and what it
intended.
Michael - 28 Oct 2004 10:55 GMT
Implementation date should be Nov 10
