Telcos thinking caps Michael Sainsbury NOVEMBER 26, 2004
THE battle for Christmas mobile phone customers begins in earnest next week when Vodafone introduces a $49 capped monthly plan for $200 worth of calls and text messaging.
Vodafone chief marketing officer Ian Sherger said it was 'something we have been planning for a long time'. 'This is a high-volume play,' he said. 'We think Telstra and Optus customers will now start to really notice the cap.'
The offer matches Hutchison's '3' $49 capped plan already released. Also arriving next Wednesday will be 'virtual' mobile operator Virgin Mobile with a $45 cap - its first foray into mass market capped plans.
From December 6, Vodafone will also re-enter the market with $0 phones, recanting several years of eschewing such a strategy, according to an internal newsletter obtained by The Australian. Optus and Telstra have released $79 capped plans but are both focused on higher call rate plans.
Alex P - 26 Nov 2004 04:50 GMT someone forgot to tell the author to get a look at virgin's website. they've had a 60$ cap plan for ages..

Is that like RedSim one-cent-a-second which was going to "REVOLUTIONISE" the industry? Get real Vodafone, and get competitive
Brendon - 26 Nov 2004 22:35 GMT > Get real Vodafone, and get competitive Better value for money than that Telstra sh.t...
Michael - 27 Nov 2004 00:53 GMT > > Get real Vodafone, and get competitive > > Better value for money than that Telstra sh.t... Then why do they have so few customers, less than Telstra, and Optus, and i wouldnt be surprised if Three overtake them in the next few years?
thomo - 27 Nov 2004 02:22 GMT Vodafone are truly international & should be able to ramp up their numbers with all the present promotions.
Telstra has the traditionalist (& nationalist) customers who have grown up with the former telephone monopoly. Optus rivals them as a broad range service provider (duopoly). International competitors will eventually catch up as services change & integrate and competition becomes respected.

Rod Speed - 27 Nov 2004 03:09 GMT > Vodafone are truly international & should be able to > ramp up their numbers with all the present promotions. Not a f.cking clue, as always.
No wonder no one is actually stupid enough to employ it.
> Telstra has the traditionalist (& nationalist) customers > who have grown up with the former telephone monopoly. And some do find some of their offerings good value anyway.
> Optus rivals them as a broad range service provider (duopoly). Clearly wouldnt know what a duopoly was if it bit it on the lard arse.
No wonder no one is actually stupid enough to employ it.
> International competitors will eventually catch up as services > change & integrate and competition becomes respected. The same stupid pig ignorant claim was made about banks too.
No wonder no one is actually stupid enough to employ it.

They just dont seem to be able to compete in Australia, theyve been around since late 1993, and i think only last year did they actually make a profit.
They need to "break the shackles" of their efforts in the UK etc, and compete in Aus. The UK is a completely diff. kettle of fish

Coverage, Mikey. Certainly over here in the west, they are down on what Optus and Te$tra provide.

Certainly over here in the west, they are down on what Optus > and Te$tra provide. While I won't deny Telstra and Optus have better coverage outside of the metro areas, I find Vodafone has better coverage in metro Sydney.
I switched from Telstra mid-last year, and prior to this I had poor reception at my home and in many buildings around Sydney. After switching to Vodafone I get great coverage at home and have yet to have an instance where I have lost reception anywhere around Sydney.
In fact, recently I was out around Orange, Bathurst and Oberon - as well as around Yass and Wagga. I was travelling with one other person who used Optus GSM and had a phone in a car kit that was on Telstra GSM. When comparing all three networks (when used without the aid of a car kit) I could quite confidently state that Vodafone could be used in many places the others couldn't - except in Orange and Yass, where Telstra was better.
I agree Telstra is better in regional areas, but Vodafone does provide great coverage in any built up area.

>I agree Telstra is better in regional areas, but Vodafone does provide great >coverage in any built up area. I'm in suburban Perth, and the coverage is non-existent at the local school (SWMBO teaches) and is extremely iffy in the local "townsite".

I was only referring to Sydney and it's surrounds, I probably should have made that clearer. I have had little experience with Vodafone in any other states.
budgie - 29 Nov 2004 12:39 GMT >> (snip) >> [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] >made that clearer. I have had little experience with Vodafone in any other >states. No probs, I understood that. I was just pointing out that elsewhere it is very different. We still have four mobiles in this household on Voda, but the migration to iSIM starts as soon as the sims arrive. Better coverage, better rates.

Pay peanuts and get substandard coverage. Pay premium prices and you get a premium network.

Thats all that counts
John Smith - 30 Nov 2004 11:17 GMT The vodafone cap now includes $230 of included credit, a last minute change by vodafone.
