I've looked through old posts re this subject and now i'm even more
confused. Is internet via gprs on vodafone prepaid (ie using phone as
amodem for laptop) currently availaible or not?
losi - 20 Jan 2005 04:14 GMT
No, only wap GPRS on the handset

You can use the WAP gprs proxy as a normal proxy on port 8080, but it does a
piss poor job at surfing the web compared to NAT access on Postpaid..

Why does everyone want this so desperately anyway? Are the majority of this
newsgroup children or something?

It's useful for grey nomads too.

Nope, they dont need to use prepaid.

But some of them _are_ povs, and bloody proud of it too.

Because not much beats Vodafone prepaid for it's inclusion of services
in the call caps.

Everyone doesnt, just some of the druggys, povs and children.

Or druggys and povs, yes.

Yeah, you got me, I was asking for my 11-year-old

I don't want him running up huge bills surfing the net on the school
bus. But he does like to check his performance in the ASX sharemarket
games on the way home, although i suspect he may have re-invested the $
he made last year on something he calls index trading warrants or
whatever....

Chip off the old block, although I wish i knew how to trade warrants -
I'm sure i still have one or two for various traffic misunderstandings
that I've forgotten to pay.

For $49 on the VF data plan you can get 500M of access (at least), $11,000
worth at 2.2c/kB

Or on Optus postpaid I could pay 0.55c/kB (max)

GPRS costs 0.0 cents per kb when you have no credit on Voda, so download
as much as you want!

GPRS internet over Vodafone Pre Pay is currently not available, the
only that Vodafone Pre Pay customer can use on GPRS are PXT, Vodafone
Live and WAP.

WAP
try reading the post..
WAP is internet filtered via a WAP proxy, its not the true Internet.. I.E
pop3 email, ftp, telnet, instant message apps etc..

Well the WAP configurations I have seen on some phones involve dialing a
number to access them, where as GPRS on my phone connects to an IP
address.  It works and it is on Voda pre-paid and I can use it when
there is NO CREDIT!!

Yep, my 12yo son does the same!  So, he can run out of credit, yet still
get on and use msn messenger, hotmail etc...don't ask me!  all I know is
that he does it! :P

May well be a billing bug, but it has been like that for at least 12
months I know of!
