Interesting bit of kit, and yeah, the telephone part can be turned off independant of the Palm Pilot (aviation reference!) part. Experience and anecdotal evidence suggests that the device might have a genetic (ie: they all have it) problem with the microphone though. People talking on one can't be heard with any degree of reliability. Otherwise, SWMBO swears by it. Cause they are "capable" of transmission, they come under the same rules as mobiles. G-S They usually have a physical switch or function key combination to turn the transceiver on or off. > G'day all, > > Whats the deal with using there in flight? > Can the phone function be turned off My XDAIIs (i-mate, pda2k) has an "In Flight Mode" which shuts down the half of the phone that is used for GSM and only the PDA half operates. Airlines can now buy a device which will allow mobile phones to be used in planes :) Who knows if this will become standard or only certain airlines will take advantage of the new technology :) Dunno how it technically works :) Just know its available..... It has already started rolling out in-flight Wi-Fi for web-browsing and email. Every seat (including economy class) gets a power point for powering a notebook PC. Cost: About $20 for a long-haul flight or about $7 for an hour of service. Further to my previous comments about the microphone problem with the Palm Treo 650... After further analysis, it seems that the problem was not with the microphone, but rather with the interface between the chair and the keyboard. SWMBO had been putting it in to speakerphone mode for each and every call, and the phone drops into a dodgy semi-simplex mode when you do that. (This does suggest that it's pretty much useless as a speakerphone, but as a regular telephone, it's quite good after a bit of operator training!). GB |
