Hi all, I'm gonna be going to the UK and Europe for an extended stay in a few mths, wondering what the best prepaid deal would be in terms of call rates to UK mobiles and back to Australia. It would also be handy if the prepaid could have roaming, as trips to various parts of Europe will be made but if this makes the other costs too high (or the roaming costs are too high which I suspect they might be) I guess it's best to just use starter packs in the other countries and toss the SIM's when I leave? Your advice would be appreciated! Virgin Mobile UK. Buy a SIM on ebay before you leave AU (then you can tell friends your number). Can roam overseas (Europe no probs); only disdvantage is that you have to have bought the topup vouchers in the UK before you leave (ie: can't buy them online or anywhere else in Europe). Don't buy a Virgin SIM card on Ebay - buy one when you arrive in the UK as generally it'll be cheaper and you can be *sure* it come with credit. You could probably get one at W.H. Smith at the airport when you arrive if you need it urgently. Buying a Vrigin SIM in the UK guarantees it will come with an electronic top-up swipe card, which means top-ups can be made in retails outlets (like Tesco and Sainsbury's supermarkets) using an Australian credit card. Another plus with Virgin is the calls can be made to Australia using the increasing popular "call-though" services in the UK. By dialling an 0845 or 0870/0871 access number, which Virgin charge at 10p and 15p per minute respectively, a saving can be made over Virgin's 20p per minute rate to Australia. As a Virgin customer I find there roaming rates for Europe some of the most reasonable, but of course buying local SIMs will always be cheaper. Yep, Virgin Mobile UK is a good option, but it might be worth looking into a couple of new players too. Particularly the case if you're expecting to make many calls to other UK mobile networks (which are usually much more expensive than same-network calls or calls to landlines) - eg Virgin charges 35p/min to call other mobile networks, more than double their standard rate. Fresh Mobile (from Carphone Warehouse) http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/commerce/servlet/gben-server-PageServer?ARTICLE =STATIC.FRESHNETWORK.FEB.WELCOME&NODE_ID=5902 Easy Mobile https://www.easymobile.com/ These mobs have a 15p/min rate to any UK landline or mobile, with 5p text. There's also a price war on at the moment, with those prices down to about 5p/min and 2p text (but those prices are likely to go back to normal in a few months). Also, note that these are really cut-price business models - bare bones operations that have limited account features. I don't know specifically about international roaming, but I suspect they might not offer it. Vodafone and T-mobile is best UK Network. There not many places u can go in the UK with out getting signal on these networks. Vodafone the best. UK Vodafone pay as you go also has Int Roaming on. Bloudy hell 99p per min to phone australia looking at the Vodafone.co.uk website. O2 are better for calls back to australia to a land line is only 10p per min evening and weekend rates and 35p per min daytime rates when you pay one off charge of £4.99 for International Talk & Text Bolt with pay as you go o2 not bad. only 10p per txt back to Australia to. Think o2 would be best your best bet. If u order on line u dont need id or UK Address as these sims work with out being activated. Spend some time in uk.telecom.mobile (or even the UK) and this will become obvious. So while "T-Mobile is best UK Network" [sic], but Virgin which uses the T-Mobile network is the "worse UK network" [sic]. Care to explain this? -- Cheers, Jason.
