There are websites which tell you how to unlock phones yourself... what
brand is it? I know Nokias are easy because you don't need to connect a
cable to your computer to do it... not sure about other brands.

Do a bit of a search and maybe you'll find something.

What does unlocking a Three handset do for you, does that mean it will work
on all GSM carriers?
Normally the "fallback" GSM network if out of "Three" WCDMA coverage is
Vodafone correct?
With only one true 3G network in Australia I'm not sure I see what's going
on here...

In Australia, it means that it will work with a normal 2G SIM on any of
Telstra, Vodafone or Optus's 2GSM networks, as well as the 3 USIM.

It's now Telstra. Although I don't think network locking necessarily
has any impact on roaming - I've known handsets locked to UK networks
to roam fine to Australian networks while using a UK SIM, but won't
accept an Australian SIM.
Analogous to Orange CDMA handsets that will roam to Telstra CDMA, but
won't accept Telstra as the primary service.

it means I can unlock the phone, disconnect from three, and get on another
network without needing a new phone.

Not any more, its Telstra, but Voda will work till end of June or some such

So you can use your handset permanently on a 2g net

support lines, even Diners have now given me an Aussie contact

Yeah , I have been in that shop.
It sells all sorts of stuff for mobiles as well as doing repairs.
It's on the left hand side about 4 shops down , as you go down the arcade
from Hay St to Murray St .
