Virgin dont exist as a carrier so they use Optuses
See www.aca.gov.au

It's far more complicated.  With number portability, there's no way for a
casual caller to figure out a user's carrier just by looking at the first
few digits of the number.

If you want to use it for Virgin2Virgin rate your best bet is to ask
the people. Otherwise you can only guess.

He said nothing about MNP, he just asked "which Telco's have which prefix?"

Why dont you just give the real answer, instead of going off on a tangent?

Tangent? , I think he was spot on.
For all practical purposes the "Real answer" will not help anyone.
The question was asked from a subscriber's point of view , i.e how can I
tell what carrier a person is on by their number.
The answer is nowadays, from a consumer point of view, you cannot.
The reason? MNP...

Mikey wouldn't understand - see the way he replies to many of the queries
people raise here.  I think he might identify very closely with many of the
offshore call centre people we come across these days, ie address EXACTLY
the words that the customer utters, nothing more, without considering the
context or the nuances... like a robot.
