Can someone explain how the new walkie talkie feature works on the
mobile network were you can press a button on your phone to talk to
someone in close proximity.Due to them saying the call is free is this
because you are talking through the same cell tower (basically it is
just the repeater) and they are using the same frequency range as the
GSM network?I have a background in radio comms so you can get technical
with the explaination.
Thanks.

I think your thinking of push to talk..

Both handsets send voice over the GPRS network, (ie. computer data like the
internet) for a flat fee, i.e on optus 95c a day or whatever it is..

You'd also require handsets that support PTT feature.
Optus is the only carrier to market it so far.

Pash to talk has been out for about year now, no word if Vodafone is
going to launch it too.
