G'day,
Dunno if this has been addressed before, i am newbie.
From time to time i notice an icon on my nokia 6250, top left hand
corner, which resembles an unlocked padlock. Not entirely sure if it is
only there briefly on power up, or sometimes when a call / message is
sent / received. i have heard that it has something to do with the
encryption status, but am seeking further advice / knowledge of this
icon and its purpose / meaning.
TIA

so then, meaning "what" about the encryption ? who / what controls
enabling / disabling encryption as shown by the icon appearing briefly
from time to time ?

I'm guessing you're on Telstra, whose network seems to send CIPHERING MODE
COMMAND at a later stage in connection establishment. The icon when
illuminated indicates that no ciphering is being applied to data being sent
over the radio link.
In this case, since it only flashes briefly, your call/SMS is still
encrypted (albeit quite weakly).

Thanks JQ, very informative site, well worth the visit. FYI - i'm with
Voda. I haven't often seen the icon, just recently in a local hoyts
putting the phone to silent when i accidently turned it off then back on
again. tho, maybe a couple of years ago when with telstra, i saw it more
often.
