We have a few older phones here, Motorolla & a samsung that are locked to
the Optus network. We've had several different simcards in these phones and
I have probably 8 old optus prepaid simcards here so I don't know which card
goes with which phone. I rang last year asking to get one of them unlocked
and they told me I can't without the original simcard in the phone. Is there
another way to get them unlocked? They are all inactive cards. If I'd known
it needs the original simcard I would have written down what the numbers
were. Any ideas? I was thinking about selling the phones but they wouldn't
be much use to anyone locked.

Okay here's what I have and all are locked to Optus. 2 x Motorola C300 a
Samsung SGH-R220 & I forgot about the Alcatel one touch 320. I have them
sitting around doing nothing and I know they aren't worth much but thought
maybe I can get a few dollars on ebay for them rather than have them sitting
here gathering dust. We all got new phones in December and will probably
never use these phones again as we have a couple of Nokia 3315 backup phones
as it is.. I guess I could sell them letting people know they are locked to
Optus.

do yourself a favor and put them in the phone recycler at your local dick
smith or telstra shop

Yeah I figured that's about all they are worth. Just out of curiousity, what
do they do with the old phones? I mean how do they dispose of them?

I didn't mean to be rude or anything, it's just that I have been in the same
boat, have a handset that you think will be worth something on ebay, but
unfortunately the demand is not there.

I saw something on TV a few months back about the recycling of mobile
phones. It is something they effectively do as a PR exercise, through the
Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA, industry body).

It appeared at the time that AMTA were over-exaggerating what was being
recycled. Despite claims that the plastics were being recycled, and the
metals etc melted down and recycled, it turned out that none of the plastics
were actually being recycled at all, and most of the stuff was just being
dumped as landill anyway.

(snip)

As an exercise, I started watching ebay prices on "old" GSM mobiles a few weeks
back.  We have four 3315's in this household, and I wondered how much one in
decent nick would cost as a spare.

Typical prices ran from $40 to $75.  Shite, they were $99 unlocked when I last
saw them new.  I know they are a reasonable basic phone, but they have held
value better that I expected.

I started checking out things on ebay (not just phones) out of curiousity
this past week and some of the prices they get are ridiculous when you can
get the same thing new with warranty for not much more. All I can say is
people need to check and compare the price of something new before they go
there and start bidding.

I honestly didn't take offence at your comment. I know they aren't worth
much..
