Hello,

I'm Italian and I'll be in Australia (in Runaway Bay, Gold Coast Qld)
from January the 1st to February the 4th and I'd like to use internet
on my notebook with my gprs/umts mobile phone without spending too
much.
What's the best (price, coverage, speed...) prepaid gprs/umts flat to
be used in that place?

Thank you very much in advance,
Giampaolo

Giampaolo,

I don't like your chances in terms of UMTS outside of major cities. But
in case of the Gold Coast you could be lucky. Check the websites below
falls into that category. Three I am not familiar with Queensland
infrastructure - maybe somebody local can help you there.

I terms of FlatRate PlansI think Vodafone & 3 could be the best bet.
AFAIK they were the only one's that included Data usage in some of their
flat rate plans. I know Optus don't and I am fairly sure Telstra did not
either.

If you wanna do some reading:

www.vodafone.com
www.optus.com.au
www.three.com.au
www.telstra.com

They are the UMTS players.

HTH

Thank you very much for your answer, I think I'll chose Vodafone. In
the site I've found the flat called "Data bunde, power use" at
49$/month that gives me 1 GB.
Does someone knows it? Is it good as it seems? and what about the
notebook configuration?
Many thanks in advance

Where did you see that?

I thought $49 gets you 300Mb; $99 = 1Gb.

Vodafone is very good. You won't get 3G on the Gold Coast with them,
you will get 2.5 G, which is much slower. The ONLY viable 3g coverage
there is three.com.au. .

Voda have a support site, http://wireless.vodafone.com.au . It's
pretty easy.

I suggest you forget the mobile internet and buy a prepaid dialup
package and use the 56k modem with your laptop computer, unless you need
internet while away from a phone point.
as well, internet cafes are numerous and fairly cheap.

I suggest that you forget dialup and mobile fones completely.  Just use the
broadband in your hotel room for about $5/hour or $20/day or use wi-fi at
McDonalds (buy a Telstra prepaid card for the latter).
